High uric acid: 5 symptoms that show up on the skin

Increased uric acid levels in the body is medically known as hyperuricemia, and can often go unnoticed in the early stages. However, when levels remain elevated for longer durations, the body may begin to show visible signs, particularly on the skin. These signs are often related to a condition known as gout, which results from the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints and tissues. While many people associate high uric acid with joint pain, its cutaneous, or skin-related, manifestations are also important indicators.
Here is a closer look at skin symptoms linked to high levels of uric acid in the body

2/8

Tophi: Crystal deposits under the skin

One of the most distinct signs of long-term elevated levels of uric acid in the body. These are hard, visible lumps usually formed by the accumulation of monosodium urate crystals. They can appear firm, nodular lumps that can be white, yellow or skin-coloured. If left untreated they can become painful over the time, and ulcerate, leaking chalky white material.

3/8

Redness or swelling

If a gout-flares up, the skin over the affected joint may become red or purplish in color, could be warm to touch and can even appear swollen or shiny. This condition is caused by high inflammation levels in the body, and the skin may look a little stretched, tender, particularly over big toe, ankle or knee as well.

4/8

Shiny or tight skin

As inflammation increases during an acute attack, the skin over the swollen joint may start to appear tight or glossy, which happens due to fluid retention or stretching of the skin over the inflamed tissue. Over time, if this symptom is not relieved it can cause sharp and shooting pain, typically at night or the early morning hours when there is a mild dehydration in the body or due to lack of movement during the sleep can also contribute to the same

5/8

Hyperpigmentation

This might not be a primary diagnostic sign of high uric acid, however, if someone is suffering from hyperuricemia, the darkened skin near the joint is a sign of chronic inflammation or tissue stress that should prompt for further medical evaluation and medical management. It can also happen due to crystal deposits, accompanied alongside swelling and pain.

Ignoring these signs may lead to joint damage or gout flare-ups, so timely diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent complications

6/8

Flaky or peeling skin

It usually occurs after the gout is resolved and it is common for the skin over the affected joint to peel or flake, the reason being as the inflammation decreases, the outer layer of the skin may begin to shed, much like what happens after a sunburn. This is a sign of recovery but may also indicate that the skin was significantly stretched or inflamed during the increased levels of uric acid in the body.

7/8

Commonly affected skin areas

Elbows
Toes
Ankles
Heels
Knees
Fingers
It is imperative to note, that these signs might not be the first indication of increased levels of uric acid in the body, but can surely signal to impending one. These areas can develop pain, swelling, or stiffness, often serving as early warning signs of elevated uric acid and potential gout flare-ups.
