RFK Jr.'s panel ends Hepatitis B vaccine recommendation for newborns: What is it and why was it required?
On December 5th, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s vaccine advisory panel voted to no longer universally recommend the first dose of Hepatitis B vaccine for newborns within 24 hours of birth.
For parents who decline the vaccination at birth, the panel recommended the first shot be delayed to "no earlier than two months of age."
However, the panel does recommend vaccination at birth for babies born to mothers with Hepatitis B. Additionally, the panel recommended parents consult their doctor or healthcare provider on whether to get an antibody test during the course of the three-dose vaccine and whether the insurance companies cover the cost of the test.
The panel's recommendations are sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director. The committee lacks regulatory authority, but states often consider the panel's recommendation when requiring vaccines for school-age children and other groups.
According to the WHO, Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause acute and chronic disease. It is most commonly transmitted from mother to child during birth and delivery. It can also spread from an infected child to an uninfected child during the first 5 years of life.
As per the WHO, the vaccine is given soon after birth with boosters a few weeks later and it offers nearly 100% protection from the virus.
However, now with the panel's recall of vaccine recommendation post birth, many parents might skip the vaccination and pose a risk to their babies. “This has a great potential to cause harm, and I simply hope that the committee will accept its responsibility when this harm is caused,” ACIP member Joseph Hibbeln said to Politico after voting against changing the guidance.
Now, it remains to be seen if CDC Acting Director Jim O'Neil approves the recommendation or rejects it.
