How to manage digestive problems as you get older

Everyone faces digestive problems, which can be due to dehydration, multiple medicines or a poor lifestyle. Your eating habits also play a major role in how your digestive system works. When we were kids our parents forced us to eat healthy, as we grow older our eating habits change and one might not eat a balanced diet, which can lead to deficiency in several nutrients.

This can lead to other digestive problems like acid reflux and constipation. We know that you hate these problems and the good news is that they can be treated with just a few changes in your lifestyle. The changes are:

Healthy Diet

Most digestive problems can be overcome with the help of a well-balanced diet. Just a few changes in the diet like increased fibre content, reduced fat and salt consumption can help you get rid of the digestive problems.

3/10

Staying Active

We know that as you get older you want to relax and take a breather. But it is also important that you stay active and do some exercises to keep your body fit. You can go on a walk, do yoga or join your kids while they are playing. You should get 30 minutes of workout every day to keep your body fit.

4/10

Hydration

Keeping your body hydrated is an important step in keeping your body healthy. Lack of hydration can make it difficult for the food to pass through the large intestine causing pain and constipation. It can also lead to a lack of energy and stamina.

5/10

Check your medicines

Some medicines can have side effects like vomiting, nausea or diarrhoea. It is important that you consult a doctor in case you are facing these side effects. Ask for alternative medicines in case of side effects.

Managing Weight

Obesity contributes to digestive problems therefore it is important to maintain a healthy weight. Managing weight can also curb other health-related problems like high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

7/10

Reduce Stress

As we age, we tend to worry about a lot of things. Stress can lead to digestive problems. It increases gastric acid that leads to indigestion or heartburn. You should relax and maintain good hygiene sleep to ensure that stress does not affect your digestion.

8/10

Maintain Oral hygiene

You need to maintain good oral hygiene as the mouth is the first part of the digestive tract. You need to take care of your teeth because if you are unable to chew well it can affect your digestive system.

9/10

Take probiotics

Probiotics promote healthy digestion. It contains good bacteria that are helpful in the digestion process and can help you regulate a good digestive system. It helps with constipation and promotes good gut health. Although, it is advised that you should not take probiotics if you are facing diarrhoea.

10/10

Consult a Doctor

It is important to consult a doctor before you take any medicines and talk to him in case you are diagnosed with any disease so that they can help you come up with a plan to maintain a good gut.
