Hypertension-The silent killer

Hypertension, often referred to as the ‘silent killer,’ silently lurks in millions of lives, posing a significant risk to health. High blood pressure, if left unchecked, can lead to severe complications like heart disease and stroke. An estimated 7.5 million deaths per year, or roughly 12.8% of all deaths, are thought to be related to high blood pressure globally, as per a data released by WHO. Many of the factors driving hypertension are within our control. According to a research published in Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, hypertension is strongly driven by a set of modifiable risk factors. Let's discover what are the five modifiable risk factors of hypertension.

2/9

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is a chronic condition characterized by elevated blood pressure levels. According to the Mayo clinic, blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Hypertension is a blood pressure reading of 130/80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or higher. Two numbers are used to represent blood pressure. The first number (systolic) represents the blood vessel pressure created when the heart contracts or beats. The pressure in the arteries between heartbeats is shown by the second number (diastolic).

3/9

Unhealthy diet

One of the foremost risk factors for hypertension is an unhealthy diet. Excessive sodium intake and high sugar consumption have been linked to elevated blood pressure. To combat this risk, it is recommended to adopt a heart-healthy diet, reducing salt and sugar intake, and choosing nutrient-rich foods.

4/9

Lack of physical activity

A sedentary lifestyle is a major contributor to hypertension. Regular exercise, on the other hand, has proven benefits in managing blood pressure. Incorporating physical activity into your daily routine, even through simple exercises, can have a significant impact on your cardiovascular health.

5/9

Smoking and tobacco use

Smoking and tobacco use are well-known culprits when it comes to hypertension. The harmful chemicals in tobacco can constrict blood vessels, leading to increased blood pressure.

6/9

Excessive alcohol consumption

Excessive alcohol consumption has a direct link to hypertension. Experts advise moderation when it comes to alcohol intake, defining what constitutes healthy drinking habits. Responsible drinking is key to maintaining blood pressure within a safe range, as highlighted in various medical studies.

7/9

Stress and mental health

Chronic stress and mental health play a significant role in hypertension. To combat this risk factor, individuals are encouraged to explore relaxation techniques, practice mindfulness, and seek mental health support when needed, following guidance from organizations like the National Institute of Mental Health.

8/9

Early signs of hypertension

It's crucial to recognize the early signs of hypertension, which can include persistent headaches, nosebleeds, and dizziness, according to the World Health Organisation. However, hypertension often remains asymptomatic, underscoring the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring.

9/9

Prevention techniques

To prevent hypertension, consider making dietary changes, incorporating regular exercise, and managing stress through relaxation practices. Regular check-ups with healthcare providers are vital for early detection and intervention. The WHO underscores the significance of these preventive measures.
