Gallbladder Attack: 5 symptoms that may indicate deeper and serious issues

The gallbladder is a small organ situated below the liver, which stores bile to help with fat digestion. A gallbladder attack occurs when the organ becomes blocked or inflamed, because of gallstones. The sudden onset of this medical emergency produces severe discomfort, which becomes dangerous for your health, when left untreated. Early recognition of these warning signs enables you to receive immediate medical assistance, which prevents potential complications. Here are 5 essential warning signs of gallbladder attack that require immediate medical evaluation.

2/8

Sudden and severe pain in the upper right abdomen

A gallbladder attack produces severe and immediate pain that affects the upper, right or middle section of the abdomen. The pain spreads to the back and right shoulder blade, while lasting between 20 minutes and several hours. The gallbladder attempts to release bile after eating fatty foods, but gallstones create a blockage that triggers this pain. The pain differs from typical stomach discomfort, because it persists without relief from changing positions, or moving around. Medical help becomes necessary when the pain continues to worsen or persists.

3/8

Stomach discomfort and vomiting

The blockage of the gallbladder prevents proper fat digestion, which leads to nausea and vomiting during a gallbladder attack. The digestive process becomes disrupted because of the blockage, which results in these symptoms. The combination of abdominal pain with vomiting makes the attack more uncomfortable for the patient. Medical assistance becomes essential when vomiting continues, or leads to dehydration symptoms.

4/8

Fever and chills

The blockage of the gallbladder leads to cholecystitis, which causes inflammation and infection of the organ. The symptoms of infection include fever, chills and sweating, which appear together with abdominal pain. The condition requires immediate medical intervention because it poses a risk of infection spread. You should visit your doctor right away when you experience abdominal pain together with a fever.

5/8

Yellowing of the skin or eyes (Jaundice)

The blockage of bile ducts by gallstones, leads to blood vessel entry of bile which results in jaundice. The condition produces yellow discoloration of skin, and yellowing of eye whites. The combination of jaundice produces dark urine together with pale or clay-colored stools. A severe blockage exists when these symptoms appear, because they need immediate medical evaluation and treatment.

6/8

Loss of appetite

The digestive process becomes disrupted during gallbladder attacks, which produces diarrhea and reduced food interest. The inability to break down fats properly because of bile duct blockage, results in loose stools and stomach discomfort following meals. Medical evaluation becomes necessary when you experience decreased food interest or rapid satiety, because these signs indicate ongoing gallbladder problems.

7/8

When to seek emergency care

One needs to visit the emergency room right away, when your abdominal pain persists for more than two hours and you have a high fever, jaundice, or when you cannot keep fluids down. The quick identification of gallbladder attacks becomes essential because they share symptoms with heart attack, which can lead to dangerous complications.
