COVID surge is back in the news!

After staying away from news headlines for a good number of months, COVID is again in the news and this time it is from the US. Reports citing the data from the US CDC's COVID tracker say that COVID hospitalizations have increased by 10% from last December. A total of 8,035 people have been hospitalized due to COVID in the US and this pattern is increasing since mid-June.

What could be the possible reason for this surge?

Experts have said that heat is the main reason why COVID cases are rising and have explained that due to the heat people are staying indoors more than before and the COVID virus spreads more efficiently through the indoor air where there is no circulation. Some experts also say that waning immunity which was generated due to COVID vaccine is another reason why many people are getting infected this time.

Is there a risk of a new COVID wave?

Health experts and epidemiologists are not sure about the onset of a new COVID wave. It is because Omicron continues to remain the dominant variant and has been in circulation for a few years now. The mix of Omicron sub-variants which were hugely monitored earlier and still the same, as per reports. "At this time, CDC's genomic surveillance indicates that the increase in infections is caused by strains closely related to the Omicron strains that have been circulating since early 2022," said CDC spokesperson Kathleen Conley.

What are the symptoms seen these days?

Another reason that might explain why a new wave is not expected is that no newer symptoms have been seen so far. The state health commissioner in New York has urged people to get tested for COVID if they have a runny nose, headache, and other symptoms.

What can reduce the risk of getting the infection?

"The main ways of lowering your risk of getting COVID-19 or having serious complications from the virus haven't changed," Dr. Thomas Russo, professor and chief of infectious diseases at the University at Buffalo in New York, told Yahoo Life. Wearing a mask in crowded places, keeping the indoor air in circulation, taking booster shots, and getting tested at the earliest are still germane in controlling the spread of the virus.

Who needs to be more careful?

People who have not been vaccinated and those who are in high-risk groups need to be more careful. In view of the behavioral change seen in people after the spread of COVID slowed down, health experts have urged to remain alert. Avoid going to crowded places if it is not necessary, wear a mask when going out, do not touch exposed surfaces, keep your hands clean and sanitized, avoid touching your face with unwashed hands, and stop coming in contact with people if you show the symptoms of COVID. Older people, those with immunocompromised system, and those who have chronic diseases should religiously follow this.
