What is bariatric surgery?

Obesity has become a significant global health concern, contributing to a range of chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and joint issues. For individuals struggling with severe obesity, bariatric surgery has emerged as a potential solution to achieve lasting weight loss and improve overall health. However, while bariatric surgery can offer remarkable results, it is important to recognize that it is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and long-term success requires commitment and lifestyle changes.

Here’s what the expert says

Dr. Sanjay Verma -Director, Bariatric and GI surgery, Fortis Escorts, Okhla Road, New Delhi says, “Bariatric surgery encompasses various procedures, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding. These procedures aim to either restrict the amount of food the stomach can hold or reduce nutrient absorption. They can lead to substantial weight loss in a relatively short period, addressing obesity-related health concerns. Patients often experience improvements in blood sugar control, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, which can significantly lower the risk of associated diseases”.

3/6

Impact of bariatric surgery?

One of the primary reasons bariatric surgery is considered a viable option for long-term weight loss is its impact on appetite-regulating hormones. These procedures alter the gut-brain communication, leading to reduced hunger and increased feelings of fullness. However, the success of bariatric surgery depends on the patient's commitment to adopting healthier lifestyle habits. While surgery can kickstart weight loss, maintaining the results requires dietary modifications, regular exercise, and psychological support.

4/6

Is bariatric surgery permanent?

It is essential to understand that bariatric surgery is not a guarantee against future weight gain. Patients who undergo the procedure must adhere to dietary guidelines and recommended exercise regimens to prevent the stretching of the stomach pouch, which could lead to weight regain. Moreover, the surgery may not be suitable for everyone, as individual medical and psychological factors must be considered to determine eligibility.

What makes it a success?

Successful bariatric surgery outcomes also hinge on post-operative support and follow-up care. Physicians, dietitians, and mental health professionals play a crucial role in guiding patients through the challenges of adapting to new eating patterns and coping with potential emotional changes. Regular check-ups and ongoing guidance can help patients address any obstacles they encounter along their weight loss journey.

6/6

The takeaway

In conclusion, bariatric surgery can offer a promising solution to obesity by jumpstarting substantial weight loss and improving associated health issues. However, it is important to recognize that surgery alone is not a magic cure. Long-term success requires a comprehensive approach that includes lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, regular exercise, and psychological support.
