6 simple yoga poses that will help balance hormones and regulate thyroid functioning

How to balance hormones with yoga

Hormones are like tiny messengers silently guiding the body’s moods, metabolism, and even sleep cycles. Among them, the thyroid gland plays a special role; it sits quietly at the base of the neck, but its impact is powerful. When this butterfly-shaped gland isn’t functioning well, it can lead to fatigue, weight gain, anxiety, or even irregular periods. And here's the good news: some yoga poses, when done gently and regularly, can support the thyroid gland and help bring balance to the body's hormonal system.

This isn’t about sweating it out or twisting the body into complex postures. Here are 6 such yoga poses.

2/7

Viparita Karani

It soothes the nervous system and balances hormone levels. This restorative pose doesn’t directly stimulate the thyroid, but it helps calm the adrenal glands, which produce cortisol, the stress hormone. When cortisol is high for too long, it disrupts hormonal balance and affects the thyroid.

What makes this pose special is its simplicity. Just lying down with the legs elevated against a wall can ease tired legs, slow down the breath, and gently nudge the body into a more relaxed, parasympathetic state. And a relaxed body means happier hormones.

3/7

Setu Bandhasana

It activates the thyroid gland by applying gentle pressure to the neck. This one does more than just stretch the spine. The slight compression on the throat area in this pose may help in stimulating thyroid function. It’s particularly helpful for those dealing with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid).

When done slowly, with attention to breath, this pose also supports the chest and heart, both emotionally and physically, offering a moment of pause and connection in the day.

4/7

Ustrasana

It boosts thyroid activity by stretching the neck and increasing circulation. A gentle backbend like Ustrasana opens the front body and gives a deep stretch to the neck and throat area. This increased blood flow may help nourish the thyroid.

But what’s even more interesting is how it affects the emotional body. The chest opening involved here is known to help release built-up emotions. Emotional balance is a key player in hormonal health, something often overlooked.

5/7

Matsyasana

Called the “destroyer of all diseases” in ancient texts, it is said to deeply influence thyroid function. This pose directly stretches the throat and stimulates the thyroid and parathyroid glands. But beyond the physical stretch, it also helps improve posture, especially for those spending long hours hunched over screens.

And posture matters more than it seems. When the neck and spine are aligned, nerve signals travel more efficiently, and hormonal signals, too, can work with less resistance.

6/7

Balasana

It helps the pituitary gland (the master of all hormones) relax and reset. Child’s Pose may look like a resting pose, but it holds quiet power. It gently massages the internal organs, soothes the brain, and most importantly, allows the body to shift into a healing state.

Since hormone balance relies heavily on how the brain communicates with glands like the thyroid, any pose that calms the brain, like this one, plays an indirect but valuable role in restoring that inner rhythm.

7/7

Sarvangasana

Known as the “Queen of Asanas,” this pose is believed to work directly on the thyroid gland. Yes, Sarvangasana increases blood flow to the neck and stimulates the thyroid. But it should only be attempted under guidance, especially for those with high blood pressure or neck issues.

What makes this pose stand out is how it reverses gravity’s effect on the body. Fresh blood rushes to the neck and head, and the glands there, especially the thyroid, get nourished. It’s not just about the physical impact; this inversion is also believed to bring a sense of mental clarity and inward calm.
