5 sleep postures and which is the best one

Best sleeping position

Sleep posture plays an important role in maintaining good respiratory health and overall well-being, especially for those dealing with snoring or sleep-related breathing issues. Ultimately, sleep posture is more than just a matter of comfort — it has real effects on respiratory, heart, and metabolic health. Here are some sleep postures people go for, and which one is the best position to sleep in:

2/7

Back sleeping

According to Dr. Waseem Ud Din, consultant pulmonologist, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, “Back sleeping has some advantages, such as supporting spinal alignment and relieving lower back pain. However, it can increase snoring and the risk of airway blockage in people prone to sleep apnea, making it less ideal for those with breathing difficulties.”

3/7

Stomach sleeping

Stomach sleeping is generally not recommended, as it can restrict natural breathing and put strain on the neck and back, often leading to discomfort or pain.

4/7

Fetal position

The fetal position, where a person sleeps curled up on their side, can help reduce snoring and is often favored during pregnancy. However, if curled too tightly, it may slightly limit deep breathing.

5/7

Right side sleeping

Because it can facilitate the easier passage of stomach acid into the esophagus, sleeping on the right side can occasionally exacerbate symptoms of acid reflux. People with certain medical disorders or pregnant women may find it uncomfortable to sleep on their right side since it can put pressure on their internal organs.

6/7

Left side sleeping

Among all sleep positions, side sleeping—particularly on the left side — is often recommended. This position helps keep the airway open, reducing snoring and the risk of obstructive sleep apnea. It can also benefit people with acid reflux, as it prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus, improving sleep quality.

7/7

Best side to sleep

The "best" side to sleep on varies depending on personal preferences and circumstances. According to the Sleep Foundation, resting on your left side may be more advantageous if you have acid reflux. However, sleeping on your right side can be a better option if you have cardiac problems. Choosing the right sleep position depends on individual factors such as back or neck pain, snoring, sleep apnea, acid reflux, and pregnancy. The use of supportive pillows and good sleep habits can further improve comfort and health outcomes. Anyone experiencing ongoing sleep or breathing problems should consult a doctor to find the most suitable sleep strategy.
