5 simple lifestyle changes to manage GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) interferes with our daily life with symptoms of heartburn, discomfort, and bloating. Although to some it may not be so serious, it can b extremely uncomfortable. It is a chronic condition characterized by regular acid reflux, usually worsened by common habits. But with proper medication and little lifestyle changes, this fatal condition can be controlled. These are five evidence-based lifestyle modifications that assist in substantially alleviating GERD symptoms and general digestive health. (source: mayo clinic)

Why does GERD occur?

Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus and results in heartburn. The backwash is referred to as acid reflux, and it may irritate the lining of the esophagus. If you have a feeling of a lump in the throat, difficulty swallowing, or upper belly or chest discomfort, then you are experiencing acid reflux.

Eat small, more frequent meals

Big meals can strain your stomach, and hence reflux is likely to occur. In place of three big meals a day, eat in portions. Eat five-six small meals during the day. While eating food, ensure that you chew food well and eat slowly. Do not eat while watching TV or mobile screens. Practicing eating mindfully can prevent overeating and reduce pressure on the LES. If you have frequent acid reflux, don't eat 2-3 hours before bedtime to allow the body time to digest the food you've eaten before sleeping.

Change your sleep position

Among the most frequent acid refluxes is nighttime acid reflux. It can interfere with sleep and cause discomfort in the morning. Fortunately, if you do attempt and make a few minor changes to your sleeping environment, it will help resolve this problem. Sleep on your left side, elevate the head of your bed by 6-8 inches to assist in keeping acid from running back into the esophagus. Avoid straining your neck by using additional pillows; it will result in more acid reflux.

Cut down on drinking alcohol

Both tobacco and alcohol can weaken and inflame the esophagus, alleviating the symptoms of GERD. If you are a smoker, avail yourself of aids or programs to quit smoking now. Gradually limit your intake of alcohol. Start by noting and avoiding such triggers as wine, beer, and hard liquors. But be sure to establish realistic limits, practice in moderation, and do not drink alcohol near bedtime. Keep in mind, both of these habits have long-term health risks aside from GERD; this is only a part of a bigger issue.

Control stress levels

Chronic stress can worsen GERD symptoms. It can trigger an increase in the production of stomach acid and increased sensitivity to reflux, amplifying what might otherwise be mild discomfort. It can also contribute to GERD aggravating habits like eating too much, bad posture, and increased consumption of caffeine. Practice yoga and meditation and eat a balanced diet to be able to handle your stress. Even small practices like walking for 10 minutes a day can help soothe your nervous system.

Maintain a healthy weight

Body weight, being one of the leading causes of acid reflux, particularly if your weight is centrally distributed around the belly, adds pressure on the stomach and can lead to the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxing abnormally, permitting the acid to flow into the esophagus, resulting in GERD. Prioritize gradual, sustainable changes—such as the integration of more whole foods, portion size reduction, and routine physical exercise.
