What should morning walkers do when the air is polluted?

Should you stop going for morning walks?

Morning walks are an integral part of many people's workout routines. They help start your day on a positive note and offer various physical and mental health benefits. However, in several Indian cities like New Delhi, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Hisar, Gurgaon, and Noida, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached hazardous or severe levels. Some areas in Delhi, such as Anand Vihar station, Punjabi Bagh station, and Mundka station, have recorded AQI levels in the "severe" category, exceeding the 400 AQI mark, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). In such polluted air conditions, going for a morning walk can be more harmful than beneficial.

2/5

Risks of morning walks in polluted air

In the morning, when temperatures are low, pollutants in the air settle and become concentrated. Going for a walk in such an environment can lead to inhaling a dangerous mixture of polluted air. This can result in coughing, shortness of breath, and increase the risk of developing conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), cardiovascular disease, and even lung cancer. Here are some essential considerations:

3/5

Monitor air quality

Before heading out for your morning walk, check the Air Quality Index (AQI) for your area. Numerous apps and websites provide real-time information on air quality. The AQI will indicate the levels of pollutants in the air, such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), ozone, and nitrogen dioxide. If the AQI falls into the unhealthy or hazardous range, it's advisable not to engage in any outdoor activities.

4/5

Workout indoors

While you may be dedicated to your morning workout routine, it's important to prioritize your health. With the air outside being unsafe, consider shifting to indoor workouts. There are several walk-at-home videos that you can follow at home.

5/5

Choose a different time

If you still want to go for an outdoor walk, consider adjusting your schedule. If air quality is better, perhaps in the afternoon when the Sun is out, you can opt for a shorter outdoor walk. However, avoid strenuous exercise, and always wear N95 or N99 masks to filter out fine particulate matter and reduce your exposure to pollutants significantly.
