Morning walk vs evening walk: Which one burns more fat

From managing blood sugar to supporting heart health, walking is known to provide a range of health benefits. It is also a well-established measure that provides fat-burning and overall metabolic benefits. NIH research shows that walking increases fat oxidation and helps regulate body composition. However, for fat burning, a lot of other factors such as diet, lifestyle habits and consistency play an important part too. With this, there’s another frequently asked question, does a certain time of the day influence fat-burning efficiency of walking? Below we decode which timing burns more fat; walking in the morning or walking in the evening.

How fat-burning works for walking

When we walk, the body primarily uses aerobic metabolism to generate energy. This means it relies on oxygen to break down energy sources, mainly fats and carbohydrates, to fuel the muscles. The proportion of each fuel source the body uses depends on intensity, duration, and nutritional state. To understand which timing is more beneficial for fat burning, we need to understand how fasted vs fed state makes a difference.

Fasted vs fed state

As per NIH study, when one walks in a fasted state, the body’s glycogen levels are lower and insulin levels are minimal. This encourages the body to rely more on fat oxidation for energy.
In contrast, walking after eating shifts metabolism toward using glucose from your recent meal. Both states burn calories, but the substrate source differs, that is fat vs carbohydrate.
A 2015 study showed that performing exercise before breakfast increased 24-hour fat oxidation compared to post-meal exercise.

Walk timings are usually chosen on the basis of convenience. Both morning and evening time walks can provide a number of health benefits. The factor that influences fat burning is the energy source that the body prefers to use.
Fat oxidation may be higher in morning
Overnight fasting reduces glycogen stores and insulin levels. Lower insulin favors fat breakdown and the release of free fatty acids into the bloodstream. Studies show that exercising before breakfast increases acute fat oxidation, meaning a higher proportion of calories burned during the session comes from fat. Generally people are in a fasted state in the morning, which makes the body rely on fat oxidation for energy. Thus, more fat is burned. In contrast, in the evening, people are in a fed state, due to which glycogen and blood glucose are higher, so the body may rely more on carbohydrates during the walk.
So, in general conditions, morning time walking can burn more fat.

Fasted walking can be risky for some

Exercising on an empty stomach lowers blood sugar levels, which can affect energy, focus, and cardiovascular stability. So even if fasted morning walks can enhance fat oxidation, they may not be safe or suitable for everyone.
​Studies suggest people prone to dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting may experience low blood sugar during fasted exercise. Another study asserts that in fasted exercise, especially over 60–90 minutes, the body may start using amino acids from muscle protein for energy. Over time, repeated long-duration fasted workouts without proper nutrition can reduce muscle mass.
People with diabetes or hypoglycemia or those with heart or metabolic conditions should be more careful.

Morning walks may not influence long-term fat loss goals

Research suggests that long-term fat loss is primarily influenced by total weekly activity, dietary habits, and adherence, rather than the time of day alone. A 2023 study found that the time of day for exercise may not significantly impact long-term weight loss outcomes when total energy expenditure and dietary intake are controlled.
To best achieve long-term goals, the best time to walk is the one that can be consistently incorporated into the daily routine.
