LeBron James’ fitness philosophy: A closer look at the NBA legend’s typical routine, diet, and non-negotiables

Basketball superstar LeBron James has turned 41 today. The four-time NBA champion continues to defy his athletic limits on the basketball court. While the average NBA-career lasts about 4.5 years, LeBron, however, marks one of the longest careers and has maintained his elite performance for more than two decades now. Let’s explore LeBron James’ fitness philosophy that helps him maintain his high level performance. (Photo credits: Instagram/@kingjames)

Cold plunges, naps and massage: LeBron’s typical game day routine

The Netflix documentary “Staring Five’ gives glimpses of a typical game day for James. The day starts by waking up at 6:30 am. By 8:30 he arrives at the training facility. At 8:45, he does cold plunges for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. This is followed by team shootaround and workouts. For James, a 2 hour interval from 12pm to 2:00 is reserved for his nap. Then, practicing and warming up for the match from 2:30 to 7pm. He takes a massage and stretching treatment in between.

The diet that keeps James going

LeBron James’ diet changes as per the needs. Sometimes the diet focuses on weight loss, sometimes it’s the ‘training diet’, and sometimes he has a little ‘cheat day diet’. In a 2016 interview to Business Insider, James said, "Before competition for me would be like a chicken breast and maybe a little pasta. The carbs help because you're going out and playing a lot of minutes," he said. "But a salad and some veggies will have me perfectly fine. And before the game I might have a protein shake and some fruit, and I'll be ready to go."
As for a cheat day meal, James told ESPN that he drinks wine "pretty much every day". James’ Instagram photos show him as being near ‘oenophilic’.

No compromises with sleep

LeBron’s personal trainer Mike Mancias says in the Netflix Documentary ‘starting five’, “We tried it all in 20 years. But the most important thing is what he gets for free, and that’s sleep”. Sleep for LeBron is something ‘priceless’. LeBron says “sleep is the best recovery you can have”. He believes taking the most sleep one can get is the only way to get back to 100 percent. It’s evident that he has no compromises with sleep as even on a typical matchday, James reserves 12:00 pm to 2 pm for naps. (Photo credits: Instagram/@kingjames)

A durability ‘ingredient’ James can’t buy

Even though James and his team uses advanced technology, such as hyperbaric and red light chambers as well as cryotherapy to assist the body in repair, there’s something James admits he can’t buy. In the Netflix documentary, James says with a smile, “I’ve heard this crazy notion about how much money I spend on my body per year. And I kind of just chuckle. That is a number that I will not disclose,” however, James admits he can’t buy one thing and that is ‘time’.
