Cinnamon is not only an aromatic condiment and flavouring additive that we add generously to our cake and cereals, but it is also a powerful spice that contains several medicinal properties. It is packed with nutrients and vitamins, which when consumed in the right proportion helps to keep us healthy and prevents the risk of chronic disease including high blood pressure, cancer and obesity.

In general, both cinnamon powder and supplement are safe for consumption. But it does contain certain compounds that might be harmful to some people, if not consumed in moderation. We list some conditions in which people need to be careful before increasing the intake of cinnamon in their diet.

2/7

Blood issues

Cinnamon contains coumarin, which gives the sweet taste to the spice. But it is also used in making several blood-thinning medicines. So, if you are already taking a blood-thinning medicine then avoid excessive cinnamon intake.

3/7

Mouth ulcers

Mouth ulcer is a common health-related issue. It can happen due to an allergic reaction or due to digestive issues. We all experience it from time to time, but for some people, it is a regular thing. If mouth ulcer is a normal thing for you then you must be cautious while consuming cinnamon as it may trigger the allergic reaction.

4/7

Liver problems

Coumarin may also damage the liver and make the symptoms of your liver-related complications worse. People suffering from the problem of liver cirrhosis and jaundice must not add too much cinnamon in their diet without consulting their doctor.

5/7

Pregnant women

Cinnamon can induce premature labour or uterine contractions. So, this spice should not be taken in excess by pregnant women. Even lactating women should not take too much cinnamon without consulting the doctor.

6/7

Diabetes

Cinnamon is known for its properties to lower the blood sugar level. But if you are on diabetes medication, then you must avoid cinnamon for your own good. Compounds found in cinnamon may react with the diabetes medication and cause your blood sugar to fall too low. This may lead to dizziness and even fainting.

7/7

How much is too much

Adding a pinch of cinnamon to your cereals or cake is not harmful. The problem is when you add cinnamon extract oil or cinnamon supplement in your diet as they contain concentrate form of coumarin. 0.1 mg/kg of body weight, is the right way to calculate the coumarin intake considered safe for consumption. This amount of cinnamon intake is not harmful.
