Protein poisoning: Here are the warning signs

Protein is the first thing that we increase in our diet when trying to lose weight. Protein is said to keep us fuller for longer, helps in building muscles and promotes repair and recovery of cells after an intense workout.

Not just this, protein helps in enhancing your skin tone, hair shine, makes your bones stronger and helps you lose weight. They serve as the building block of life. While everyone should take a minimum amount of protein everyday (with every meal), many people are unable to determine the right amount they should be eating. The macronutrients have various health benefits, but if you start consuming them mindlessly, they can be bad for your health.

How much protein should you have?

Experts say that for every one kilogram of your body weight, your body needs one gram of protein. Having more than that without any carbs and fat can result in protein poisoning. Here are the warning signs of protein poisoning:

3/6

Dehydration

Excessive amounts of protein can affect your kidneys negatively as they have to work extremely hard to pass them via urine. This can lead to dehydration, which is why health specialists suggest consuming a lot of vegetables and fruits for adequate water and mineral presence.

4/6

Weight gain

An excessive amount of protein can disrupt your gut, which can lead to unnecessary weight gain.

5/6

Foul breath

A full protein-based diet, where you eat no carbohydrates, helps burn fat and carbs in your body, which can lead to bad breath. Thus, it is suggested to consume a sufficient amount of carbs along with protein for wholesome nutrition.

6/6

Depression

Women who consume disproportionate amounts of protein and low carbohydrates are more prone to psychiatric problems like depression, anxiety, mood swings and negative emotions.
