Kidney health: 4 foods to consume, (and 4 to avoid), backed by science

Kidney, the bean-shaped organ, maintains a delicate balance of nutrients in the body. However, lifestyle factors, especially diet, play a pivotal role in determining how well the kidneys function over time. If kidney health is neglected, over time it can lead to waste and toxin buildup, fluid retention, electrolyte imbalances, bone and mineral disorders and in severe cases can cause cardiovascular complications.
Diet can influence kidney health via oxidative stress and inflammation pathways. NIH study suggests nutrient-rich foods containing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds can provide benefits for kidney health.

2/12

Blueberries

These small but mighty berries are a superfood when it comes to kidney health. According to the UK National Kidney Foundation, a ½ cup serving of blueberries has less than 150 milligrams of potassium making them a low potassium fruit choice. Additionally, blueberries have rich antioxidant properties and may even improve vascular function and lower blood pressure.

3/12

Fatty fish

A study published in the British Medical Journal shows higher circulating seafood-derived omega-3 levels are linked with a lower risk of incident CKD and slower kidney function decline. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure, the two major contributors to kidney disease.

4/12

Red bell peppers

Red bell peppers are kidney-friendly because they are low in potassium and phosphorus while providing antioxidants that support cardiovascular health. According to a review published in NIH, capsaicin (present in red bell peppers) may influence renal physiology by modulating various aspects of kidney function. It has been observed to affect renal nervous activity and could play a role in regulating blood flow within the kidneys.

5/12

Olive oil

According to a study published in MDPI and reviewed by NIH, Extra virgin olive oil showed clinical benefits in patients with chronic kidney disease, and also reduced inflammatory and oxidative stress markers. Studies suggest olive oil can be beneficial for kidney health, primarily because of its healthy fat content and antioxidant properties. One can use extra virgin olive oil for cooking or as a dressing.

6/12

What to avoid to maintain kidney health

Maintaining kidney health isn’t just about what one eats. Physical activity and lifestyle factors are important, but what one avoids to eat can also reduce strain on the organs.
- Avoid processed foods, canned and salty snacks. High salt intake can raise blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for kidney damage.
- Avoid large portions of red meat and high-protein shakes. Excess protein can overwork kidneys, especially in people with reduced kidney function.
- Avoid soft drinks and sweetened cereals. High sugar intake can lead to obesity and diabetes, which are major causes of kidney disease.- Avoid excess alcohol consumption. Alcohol can dehydrate the body, raise blood pressure, and increase kidney workload, accelerating damage over time.

Other lifestyle factors

Maintaining kidney health heavily depends on your lifestyle choices. Staying well hydrated, maintaining regular physical activity and healthy weight is also important. Together, these habits can help preserve kidney function and overall health.

10/12

Staying hydrated matters

Hydration is essential for kidney function because kidneys are responsible for filtering waste, balancing electrolytes, and regulating blood pressure. Proper hydration helps the kidneys flush out toxins, prevent kidney stones, and reduce the risk of urinary tract infections.

11/12

Symptoms of kidney disease (Early)

Early kidney disease often develops quietly, with subtle signs that can be easily overlooked. Common symptoms include fatigue, swelling in the hands or feet, changes in urination frequency or color, persistent itching, and loss of appetite. Noticing these signs early and seeking medical evaluation can help prevent further kidney damage.
