India's top gastroenterologist, Dr Sarin, recommends 5 foods that can help detox the liver quickly

Foods that will help a person detox their liver

The liver works silently, filtering toxins, balancing hormones, and supporting digestion every single day. When it is burdened by processed foods, pollution, or an erratic lifestyle, its efficiency can decline. At a recent health discussion, India’s leading gastroenterologist, Dr Shiv Kumar Sarin, highlighted in an interview with the Lallantop that certain foods naturally support the liver’s detox function. These aren’t exotic superfoods but everyday ingredients found in most kitchens. When included regularly, they act like gentle cleansers, helping the liver repair and function better.

2/11

Apples

Apples are more than just a fruit for snack boxes. They are packed with pectin, a natural fiber that binds toxins and cholesterol in the gut before they reach the liver. This reduces the workload on the liver and gives it space to heal. The malic acid in apples also softens gallstones, easing bile flow. A simple desi-style fruit chaat with apples can, in fact, become a subtle way to support liver health.

3/11

Ancient grains

Dr Sarin emphasises that refined carbs put unnecessary strain on the liver, while whole grains like barley and millets do the opposite. They release energy slowly, prevent sudden sugar spikes, and reduce fat accumulation in the liver. Barley water, often recommended in Ayurveda, has mild diuretic properties that flush toxins gently. Millets, with their high antioxidant content, add another protective layer by reducing oxidative stress in liver cells.

Kala chana

Kala chana may look humble but is rich in plant protein, soluble fiber, and B vitamins that assist liver enzymes in breaking down toxins. Unlike heavy meats, kala chana doesn’t load the liver with saturated fats. Instead, it promotes lean repair and balances cholesterol. Sprouted kala chana eaten in the morning or a light evening chaat can become a natural liver-strengthening ritual.

Rainbow of vegetables

Dr Sarin advises adding more “coloured vegetables” to the plate because each shade carries a different set of antioxidants. Beetroot improves bile flow, carrots protect against toxin build-up, spinach guards against fat deposits, while bell peppers reduce inflammation. Together, they form a protective rainbow shield for the liver. A simple sabzi with three or more colours on the plate is far more powerful than a single fancy detox juice.

6/11

Coffee

While coffee is often debated, science now supports its protective role for the liver. Regular moderate intake has been shown to lower the risk of fatty liver disease and even cirrhosis. Antioxidants in coffee reduce inflammation and aid in regulating enzymes. Dr Sarin recommends black coffee without added sugar or cream for the maximum benefit. This simple daily ritual can work like an unseen guard for liver cells.

Why is liver health important?

Liver health is crucial because the liver performs essential functions such as detoxifying the bloodstream, metabolizing nutrients, regulating blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and producing vital proteins and bile for digestion. A healthy liver ensures efficient removal of toxins, supports immune defenses, balances hormones, stores important vitamins, and sustains overall metabolic processes that keep the body energized and resilient. Without proper liver function, harmful substances can accumulate, leading to serious health problems like fatty liver disease, diabetes, and impaired digestion, demonstrating why maintaining liver health is fundamental to overall well-being.
