From almonds to cashews: The best time to consume these 7 nuts

Nuts are one of the best sources of nutrients, and are an ideal choice to consume for snacking. They have long been celebrated as nutrient-dense superfoods, offering a wide range of health benefits in just a small serving. Modern dietary guidelines recommend regular nut consumption for overall wellness.

However, recent research indicates that the timing of nut consumption may enhance their benefits. Nutrient absorption, energy metabolism, and even gut microbiota respond differently depending on when nuts are eaten. So understanding “when to eat which nut”, can harness their full potential. Below we explore 7 popular nuts and the best time to eat them for optimal results. (Image credits: Canva)

Almonds

Best time to eat: Morning

Almonds are rich in Vitamin E and magnesium, which support blood sugar control and brain function. Morning time consumption may provide sustained energy. Munching some almonds with snacks can be an excellent way to start the day.

3/9

Walnuts

Best time to eat: Evening

Studies suggest omega-3 and melatonin promote brain health and better sleep, and walnuts are packed with them. Consuming almonds in the evening can improve sleep quality and support cognitive function.

4/9

Pistachios

Best time to eat: Afternoon

Pistachios are packed with protein and fiber. These nutrients stabilize energy and curb cravings. Eating them in the afternoon can provide a satisfying snack that keeps you full and energized until your next meal.

5/9

Cashews

Best time to eat: Afternoon, with lunch

Cashews have high content of zinc and iron. These nutrients support immunity and energy metabolism. Eating them in the afternoon can provide a satisfying snack that keeps you full and energized until your next meal.

6/9

Pine nuts

Best time to eat: Mid-Morning

As per studies pinolenic acid can suppress appetite and support fat metabolism. Consuming pine nuts mid-morning, that is after breakfast and before lunchtime, can help control hunger and boost energy.
Additionally, pine nuts are rich in magnesium, which support muscle and nerve function.

7/9

Peanuts

Best time to eat: Anytime snack

Peanuts are a versatile snack that can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Studies suggest peanuts are a functional food, and are rich in resveratrol and niacin. These nutrients support heart and brain health and provide a good amount of protein and healthy fats.

8/9

Brazil nuts

Best time to eat: Morning

Brazil nuts are the richest known food source of selenium, a mineral that plays a key role in thyroid function, metabolism, and reproduction. Consuming them in the morning ensures optimal absorption and utilization of selenium. For brazil nuts, it is important to maintain moderate consumption.

9/9

Eat in moderation

Nuts are highly nutritious. However, they are also calorie-dense, and their overconsumption can lead to excess calorie intake and potential health issues. Brazil nuts can become toxic if eaten in abundance. A single Brazil nut can contain up to 91 micrograms of selenium, which is close to the recommended daily intake for adults. Studies suggest consuming more than 4–5 Brazil nuts per day may lead to selenium toxicity, with symptoms such as nausea, hair loss, and even more severe effects like kidney failure. NIH study suggests almonds, walnuts, pistachios, cashews, pine nuts, and peanuts should be consumed roughly a handful per day.
