Cortisol cocktail is gaining widespread attention online

Cortisol cocktail has gained widespread attention on social media as a remedy that supposedly ‘supports stress levels’ and ‘boosts morning energy’. Can this trendy concoction actually deliver promising results? Here’s a closer look at what can happen when you drink the cortisol cocktail every day for a month.

2/7

What is a cortisol cocktail

This drink is made from a mix of electrolytes, vitamin C, and salt, and sometimes fruit juice or magnesium. The idea behind it is to help the body rehydrate, stabilize blood sugar, and promote steady energy levels. Most versions of this drink include: a pinch of sea salt, vitamin C powder or orange juice, water, and sometimes coconut water, magnesium powder, or a splash of lemon juice.

How to prepare and when to consume

The drink is simple to make, and its popularity stems from the promise of starting your day with balance and calm. In a glass of water, mix half a teaspoon of sea salt, a squeeze of fresh lemon or one-fourth cup of orange juice, and a small amount of vitamin C or magnesium powder if desired. Stir well and drink it first thing in the morning, ideally before coffee or breakfast.

3/7

What cortisol does to the body

Often termed as the ‘stress hormone’, cortisol is released by the body in response to stress, but it actually plays a much broader role in the body. Cortisol helps regulate metabolism, blood pressure, blood sugar, immune response, and even the body’s sleep–wake cycle.
When cortisol levels stay consistently elevated, usually due to chronic stress, poor sleep, or unhealthy lifestyle habits, it can start to cause problems. In contrast, too little cortisol can cause extreme fatigue, low blood pressure, and poor stress tolerance. This means it is essential to maintain cortisol balance in the body.

4/7

Do the ingredients actually help with stress?

Since there isn’t any specific research related to cortisol cocktail, let’s understand how the ingredients of this viral concoction impact cortisol levels in the body.

Electrolytes
As per a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, dietary electrolytes relate to both mood and cortisol levels. The researchers found that participants who consumed diets richer in potassium and magnesium reported slightly better mood and energy compared to those with higher sodium intake.

Vitamin C

Research indicates that vitamin C may influence the body’s stress-hormone system, including Cortisol. One randomized trial found that a high-dose ascorbic acid (vitamin C) supplement reduced plasma cortisol in women with elevated levels of the hormone after two months. Other studies suggest that vitamin C before or during stress may reduce the cortisol response to acute psychological stress.
Magnesium
In an NIH-backed trial, researchers found that when participants took 350 mg of magnesium every day for 24 weeks, their bodies produced less cortisol over a full day compared with those who didn’t take magnesium. It also helped the body manage and clear away excess stress hormones, suggesting it might have a mild calming or stress-buffering effect when taken regularly over time.

5/7

What happens when you drink cortisol cocktail everyday for a month

Studies and evidence suggest that the ingredients used in the cortisol cocktail may support the body's natural stress response. These nutrients can help your system recover better from stress by improving hydration, supporting adrenal function, and reducing fatigue.

However, it is important to note that these are supportive nutrients, not stress “cures.” The cortisol cocktail can promote the feeling of calmness because it replenishes minerals and and when consumed first thing in the morning, can prevent early-day dehydration.

Still, there’s no clinical evidence that this drink alone can significantly lower cortisol or treat stress-related issues. Its real benefit lies in promoting hydration and micronutrient balance.

6/7

Possible side effects and caution

While the ingredients are generally safe for most people, consuming too much salt or vitamin C can cause unwanted side effects. Excess salt may raise blood pressure in salt-sensitive individuals, while high doses of vitamin C can trigger digestive discomfort. Magnesium supplements can sometimes cause loose stools or interact with certain medications. If you have kidney disease, hypertension, or adrenal issues, check with your doctor before adding this drink to your daily routine.
