5 simple daily habits to keep uric acid levels in check

Your body creates uric acid as a natural substance through purine substance breakdown in food products. The body normally allows uric acid to dissolve in blood, before the kidneys remove it through urine. However, excessive levels of uric acid cause painful medical conditions, including gout and kidney stones. The control of uric acid levels is however possible through basic daily lifestyle modifications, which safeguard your health. Here are five basic habits you can incorporate into your daily schedule....

2/8

Drink plenty of water

Your body uses water to eliminate uric acid through urine production. When kidneys receive sufficient hydration, they get better at doing their job. The recommended water consumption should be 8 to 10 glasses per day, though this can vary. If you are someone who is naturally not inclined to drink a lot of water, keep a bottle with you at all times to keep sipping throughout the day. On the other hand, sugary drinks should be avoided, because they increase uric acid levels in the body. Drinking enough water supports kidney health, and decreases the risk of kidney stones and other health problems related to elevated uric acid levels.

3/8

Limit high-purine foods

The body breaks down purines from certain foods into uric acid. Consuming too much purine-rich foods will increase your uric acid levels quickly. High-purine foods include red meat as well as organ meats liver, shellfish, oily fish and some beans. Select low-purine foods among dairy products, eggs, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Practice moderation instead of avoiding foods completely, because balance produces better results. Using a wide range of ingredients which contain low purine levels during meal planning helps create better long-term health benefits.

4/8

Cut back on sugar and alcohol

The consumption of sugary drinks with fructose, together with alcohol consumption leads to increased uric acid production while simultaneously impairing uric acid elimination. Among beverages, beer stands out as the worst because it contains purines. Your uric acid levels will remain under control, when you restrict your consumption of soda, sweetened juices and alcoholic beverages. The combination of dehydration from alcohol makes uric acid crystals more probable to develop. Drinking water or herbal tea represents a better health option than sugary beverages. Lower consumption of sugar and alcohol helps both control weight gain, and decrease the risk of chronic diseases while managing uric acid levels.

5/8

Maintain a healthy weight and exercise

Higher body fat levels create conditions that elevate uric acid, while making its elimination process more challenging. Gradual weight loss achieved through healthy eating combined with regular exercise, helps decrease uric acid levels, while lowering the risk of gout attacks. Walking, swimming and cycling should be your exercise choices, because vigorous exercise increases uric acid levels. Your body becomes healthier when you exercise, because it enhances blood flow and helps remove toxins which protect your joints. Regular physical exercise builds muscle strength and bone density, which promotes joint wellness while decreasing gout attacks.

6/8

Eat foods rich in Vitamin C

Your kidneys use vitamin C to eliminate uric acid from your body. Daily consumption of vitamin C-rich foods such as citrus fruits, strawberries, bell peppers, and broccoli should be part of your diet. This apart, cherries contain antioxidants, which serve to decrease both inflammation and uric acid concentration in the body. Adding tart cherry juice together with cherries to your daily diet, may provide multitude health benefits. Natural foods with uric acid lowering properties, also enhance your immune system function and total health status. A diverse selection of colorful fruits and vegetables will provide you with essential vitamins along with antioxidants, to support metabolic health and minimize inflammation.
