5 exercises and chores that keep your brain sharp at 40

Just like our bodies, our brain too, ages. However, since the symptoms of an ageing brain are not as prominent as that of the body (wrinkles, weight gain, hair fall etc), we tend to ignore the brain, which in fact is the most important organ of the body, along with the heart. However, exercising the brain is not that difficult, and if you have just hit 40 (or even 35) now is the best time to start exercising your brain, through these simple, but effective exercises.

2/6

Brisk Walking

Walking at a brisk pace is one of the easiest and most effective ways to boost brain health. It increases blood flow to your brain, helping new brain cells grow and improving memory and thinking skills. Studies show that just 150 minutes of moderate exercise like brisk walking per week can lower the risk of dementia and keep your brain young. Walking also helps reduce stress, which is good for your brain.

3/6

Strength Training

Lifting weights or doing resistance exercises (like push-ups or squats) is not only good for your muscles but also for your brain. Strength training improves memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. It helps your brain work better by increasing certain brain proteins that protect neurons and support new connections. Experts recommend including strength training at least twice a week for the best brain benefits.

4/6

Dancing

Dancing is a fun way to combine physical movement with mental challenge. Learning new dance steps requires coordination, memory, and focus-all of which stimulate your brain. Plus, dancing increases heart rate, which improves blood flow to the brain. Whether you dance alone or with others, it’s a great brain booster that also lifts your mood.

5/6

Household Chores

You might not think of chores as exercise, but activities like cleaning, gardening, cooking, or tidying up count as physical movement that benefits your brain. Research shows that people who spend more time doing household chores have larger brain volume in areas linked to memory and cognition. Chores also require planning and organization, which help build new brain connections. So, everyday tasks can keep your brain sharp and healthy.

6/6

Yoga and Stretching

Yoga and stretching exercises improve balance, flexibility, and relaxation. They also reduce stress and inflammation, which can harm the brain over time. Yoga combines gentle movement with deep breathing and mindfulness, helping improve focus and mental clarity. Practicing yoga regularly supports brain health by calming the mind and encouraging new brain cell growth.
