​World Rum Day 2021

This one is for all the rum lovers. World Rum Day is celebrated on the 2nd Saturday of July each year, and it was launched in 2019 by Paul Jackson, spirits writer and Editor of World Rum Guide. It's an annual and global celebration of rum and distilleries, where the world comes together and celebrates the oldest spirit of the world. ​Oldest spirit

Yes, you read the header right. Rum is the first branded spirit to come into existence. The first-ever rum was distilled in the 1620s at the Carribean, which holds its position as the largest rum distillery till date. ​Sugar content

​Used as a currency

​It is healthier

You will be surprised to know that prior to 1970, the Royal Navy used to give out a ration of rum, because it was believed that rum was effective in fighting off the dreaded scurvy. Later it was banned, after experts found that consuming rum would lead to unsteady hands when working with machinery. (Image: istock)
