Sweet delicacies of India

If there is one season in which we can satisfy all our cravings, it's the winter season. It’s a time when we can all indulge in hot and sweet delicacies in the comfort of our homes. It is actually the best season one can indulge in all the good food. All the foods made in winter provide comfort & warmth, which we all crave for! Here is a list of some winter sweets from across the country for those who have a sweet tooth!

Daulat Ki Chaat/Malai Makhan - Delhi

Popularised by Khemchand Adesh Kumar of Moradabad, who was actually a farmer by profession this chaat is made with raw milk and cream. This dessert melts in the mouth and is only available in the winter season. When in Delhi, you can visit Kinari Bazar in Chandni Chowk between 9 am - 2 pm to savour the taste of this delicious dessert.

Jalebi - Delhi

For all sweet lovers, hot jalebi is something that everyone must indulge in. Not just in Delhi, but jalebis can be found across North India and are juicy & delicious. The popularity is so much so that one can also find paneer jalebis now. Jalebi is often enjoyed with rabdi; however, in some places like Indore and Udaipur, one can find Poha-Jalebi as one of the popular pairings.

Nolen Gurer Sandesh - West Bengal

It’s a popular Bengali sweet dish and is made only in winters, as it's prepared with date palm jaggery which is otherwise known as ‘Nolen Gurer’ or ‘Jhola Gur’. This sandesh is made with full cream milk, nolen gur, ghee and lemon.

Panjiri - Punjab

Punjabi are famous for their delicious food and here is one other example of it. In winters, one can find panjiri in all the Punjabi households, which not only provides warmth to the body but energy as well. In Punjabi households, one cannot step out of the home with this Panjiri, which is made in the shape of laddoos. This Panjiri is made with wheat flour, almonds, sugar and ghee.

Gajar Ka Halwa - Punjab

Another popular sweet dish from Punjab, gajar ka halwa is a must in winters. The popularity of this sweet dish is so much so that one can find this halwa everywhere now. It’s made with grated or shredded carrots, sugar, khoya/mawa and ghee. Some people use milk in this halwa while others chose to avoid it.

Gond Ke Laddoo - Rajasthan

It is believed that these laddoos have their origins in Rajasthan, but you can these laddoos everywhere these days. Made from a special edible gum resin also known as gond, wheat flour, fox nuts, seeds, dry fruits, jaggery and ghee, these laddoos are a must in winters. They are best enjoyed with a warm glass of milk and is often given to lactating mothers as it provides warmth to the mothers while increasing the quantity of breast milk.

Chikkis/Gajak - Uttar Pradesh

This popular sweet candy is crunchy, crispy and delicious at the same time. It's made using different ingredients like roasted peanuts, seeds, rose petals and dry fruits, but the main ingredient remains the same and it's jaggery. Originally invented by Maganlal Aggarwal, the traditional chikki was made using peanuts, jaggery and ghee and was earlier names ‘Gud Dani’.

Lapsi - Gujarat

Often consumed in the breakfast, this is a popular sweet dish of Gujarat and is made with broken wheat or dalia, ghee, raisins, nuts and dry fruits with some sugar. This pudding is known to be super delicious in taste while providing warmth to the body.

Tilkut - Bihar

It's another delicacy that provides warmth to the body in winters and is specially made in Bihar on the occasion of Makar Sakranti and Sakat Chauth.
