Wine and diabetes

Many people love enjoying alcohol along with the food (especially dinner), as it helps relax them after a hectic day. While some people find alcohol consumption on a daily basis an unhealthy practice, a recent study suggests that alcohol consumption along with food may help lower the risk of type-2 diabetes. Wine, food, and diabetes

The study authored by Hao Ma from the Tulane University states that moderate consumption of alcohol (no more than 14 grams per day for women and 28 grams per day for men), especially wine, with meals is helpful in lowering the risk of type-2 diabetes. The study duly highlights that the effect of alcohol totally depends on how and when it is consumed. (Image: istock)

The general belief

Alcohol consumption is often linked to short- and long-term health risks, including motor vehicle crashes, violence, sexual risk behaviours, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, breast cancer, liver disease, depression, suicide, accidents, alcohol abuse, and alcoholism. As per experts, the rate of these health risks increases as the amount of alcohol consumption increases. (Image: istock)

The findings

For this study, 312,400 individuals were examined for about 11 years. The analysis, presented at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2022, reflects that during an average of nearly 11 years of follow-up, only 8,600 of the adults in the study developed type 2 diabetes. Final words

As per health experts, limiting the consumption of alcohol is always advisable for both men and women. Pairing it with food not only enriches the experience but also drinking (red wine) is also considered good for gut health. It has been found that red wine is also associated with lower body mass index and it also lowers bad cholesterol. (Image: istock)
