Health benefits of bamboo shoots

If you have been to the North-Eastern India, a common food ingredient that is a part of their daily food habit is ‘Bamboo Shoots’. From pickle to side dish, it is used in various ways because it is a powerhouse of nutrients and protects the body from many infections. Also known as bamboo sprouts, they are available in fresh, fermented and canned form and with the food fusion trend at its peak, are now easily available in other cities too. In the traditional medicine world, they are often mentioned as 'The Poor Man's Timber and ‘The Green Gold’, which has innumerable medicinal properties. Here ‘s why you need to include it in your diet:

​Helpful in weight loss

Bamboo shoots are low in calories and are considered weight-loss friendly. According to experts, 1 cup of bamboo shoots contains about 13 calories and half a gram of fat. They are also high in dietary fibre, which helps in digestion and keeps you full for a longer duration.

​Good for heart

Loaded with phytosterols and phytonutrients, bamboo shoots are best consumed boiled, fermented and help in clearing clogged arteries and dissolve bad or LDL cholesterol. Cardiologists suggest that heart patients should eat it twice a week.

​Strengthens immunity

It is a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals, that helps in boosting the immunity. It is suggested to eat the boiled shoots during the onset of monsoon and winter to stay away from viral and bacterial infections. It is also good for sharp functioning of the brain and prevents the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

​Antivenomous

You will be surprised to know that the juice of bamboo shoots is very effective against poisoning of snakes, scorpion and bites from other venomous creatures. According to Ayurveda, drinking fresh bamboo juice and applying it on the wound helps in flushing out the poison.But it is suggested to first rush the victim to hospital and try it under medical supervision.

​Helpful during pregnancy

Bamboo shoots can stimulate uterine contractions and thus are good for pregnant women as they aid in normal delivery. According to traditional Chinese medicine, pregnant women should add small portions of bamboo shoots in their diet (only after doctor’s recommendation) at the last stage of pregnancy to facilitate a normal delivery.

​Improve lungs functioning

Rich in vitamins and other compounds, regular consumption of bamboo shoots help in strengthening and functioning of lungs. It is suggested to boil washed bamboo shoots in hot water for 5 minutes and then drink it with honey twice a week for effective results.
