Why should you skip cruciferous veggies during the monsoon season

Why should you skip cruciferous veggies during the monsoon season

Indulging in comfort foods while it is raining outside may seem like the most comforting experience, so whether it is a piping hot bowl of khichdi or some crispy Gobi ke pakore or a creamy homemade broccoli pasta, it is tough to imagine a delightful meal with cruciferous veggies, but do you know why you must avoid them during the rainy weather? Here’s an insight…

2/4

Bugs and Germs

The monsoon’s moisture creates the perfect environment for worms, bacteria, and even fungi to thrive. And cruciferous vegetables, especially cauliflower and cabbage, tend to trap these pests deep inside their tightly packed layers. Even a thorough wash sometimes isn’t enough to get rid of them. If not cooked properly, these bugs can cause food poisoning, stomach infections, and other unpleasant surprises.

3/4

Upset a Sensitive Stomach

These veggies are known for being gas-producing—thanks to a compound called raffinose and their tough-to-digest fibers. During the rainy season, our digestion naturally weakens (something even Ayurveda points out), and these heavy vegetables can make things worse. If you’ve ever felt bloated or gassy after a plate of gobi sabzi, it’s likely your tummy wasn’t ready to handle it, especially during this damp season.

4/4

Colds, Coughs & Allergies

Monsoon often brings with it a spike in seasonal sniffles. Cruciferous veggies, if not cooked well, can increase mucus production in some people. This can lead to congestion, sore throats, or even trigger allergies and asthma symptoms. If you're someone who catches colds easily or struggles with sinus issues, it’s best to give these veggies a break during this time.
