What is Tilkut?

Tilkut is a regional sweet, commonly available in Bihar and Jharkhand. It is a sweet made with pounded sesame seeds, nuts, jaggery, sugar, and ghee. It holds special importance during the festival of Makar Sankranti. According to food experts, the best tilkut is said to be from Gaya and is native to Magadh region of Bihar. ​Types of Tilkut

There are 3 types of tilkuts- the refined sugar tilkut is white in colour, the shakkar tilkut is made of unrefined sugar and is light brown in colour and the gur tilkut is made of jaggery and is dark brown in colour. (Image: istock)

​Ingredients required

350 gms sesame seeds, boora, 250 gms, 5-8 cashew, 5-8 almonds, ¼ cup raisins, and 2 tbsp ghee. (Image: istock)

Method

Heat a non-stick pan, add ghee into it, and roast cashews and almonds until brown and crunchy. In the same pan, dry roast sesame seeds on a low flame till they leave a nutty fragrance. Allow seeds to cool down and add mix boora or shakkar, and blend both the ingredients in a food processor to form a rough powder. Add roasted nuts to it and your homemade Tilkut is ready.
