Importance of watermelon and mango in summer meals

Come summer, seasonal fruits like mango and watermelon are visible across the market. Not just that from regular cafes to high-end restaurants and even fitness cloud kitchens everyone starts selling summer delights made with these fruits. But for fitness freaks, the question remains the same: Which one is better for summer nutrition? Let us find out.

Nutritional value of watermelon

According to data from the USDA, 100 gms of watermelon offers 30 calories, 91% water content, 7.6 g carbs, 6.2 g sugar, 0.6 g protein, 0.2 g fat 0.4 g fiber,112 potassium, and 10 mg magnesium

3/8

Nutritional value of mango

According to the USDA data, 100 gms of ripe mango offers 60 calories, 83% water, 15 g carbs, 13.7 g sugar, 0.8 g protein, 0.4 g fat, 1.6 g fiber, 168 mg potassium, and 10 mg magnesium

What does the comparison say?

When we compare 100 gm each of watermelon and mango, watermelon is lower in calories, higher in water, and has a higher glycemic index, which means it digests fast and doesn’t keep you full for long. It is great for hydration and great in the heat, but at the same time, it is not very satisfying on its own. On the other hand, mango has more calories, but look at what you get in return: 4x the fiber, significantly more vitamin C, vitamin A, and up to 15x more folate. That’s not just calories, that’s nutrient density. It is said that the fiber also slows digestion, improves satiety, and helps regulate blood sugar response better than people assume.

Clearing the myth

According to experts, people often get confused only by calories. When they see "higher calories," they assume “worse choice," and at the same time they see “high glycemic index” and panic without context. It is important to see the overall structure of the fruit's nutritional values and how it benefits or harms you as an individual. If you eat watermelon, you’ll likely need more food sooner. And if you eat mango, you’ll probably stay fuller longer.

Which one is better

Every fruit is good for human health and so are watermelon and mango. It all depends on an individual's preference and the nutritional need keeping age, gender, physical activities, and daily routine in mind. Hence, it is better to ask: What do you need right now? For those, who need hydration after a lot of physical movement, watermelon is a better choice, but if your body needs satiety along with a nutrient boost, then mango is the right fruit for you. These both are seasonal delights, and according to celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, seasonal fruits are valuable and they neither need guilt attached. Hence, eat them all and keep moving. Also, it is important to understand that there is a logic why nature calls them summer fruits and why they are best suited to be enjoyed in this weather. They both are best enjoyed for breakfast and evening snacking and can be tweaked into summer bowl for a filling meal.

3 ways to enjoy watermelon

Fresh chilled watermelon cubes: This is the classic way of enjoying the fruit. All you need to do is, cut watermelon into cubes or slices and chill them before serving. One can also add a pinch of black salt or chaat masala.

Watermelon juice: For this, blend watermelon chunks and strain to make a light, naturally sweet juice. Top it with mint leaves and a squeeze of lemon.

Watermelon fruit salad: For this salad, combine watermelon with other fruits like cucumber, mint, and berries, or thread cubes onto skewers along with cheese cubes. Enjoy it fresh. One can also add crumbled cheddar cheese to make it even more healthy and filling. It makes for a complete meal for summer months.
