This is why you should avoid making nimbu pani in a copper utensil

There’s no denying that nimbu pani is one of the most loved drinks across India, and there are several versions of this delightful drink across the country. As much as we Indians love nimbu pani, the way of preparing this drink can make a lot of difference, and making it in the wrong utensil can even turn it into a poison. Well, this may sound shocking, but here’s all you need to know about what happens when you make nimbu pani with the wrong utensil.

2/7

Can a copper utensil make nimbu pani toxic?

Nimbu pani, or lemon water, is one of the most popular and refreshing homemade summer drinks in India. Packed with vitamin C, electrolytes, and antioxidants, it’s known for hydrating the body and aiding digestion. While copper vessels are often known for their Ayurvedic benefits and health-enriching benefits, using them to prepare or store nimbu pani can actually turn toxic and harmful. Here's why making lemon water in copper utensils is not advisable.

3/7

Acidic Liquids

Ayurveda encourages storing plain water in copper vessels, as it helps balance the doshas and supports digestion. However, it clearly advises against storing acidic substances like lemon juice in copper, as the reaction can produce harmful by-products. Copper is only safe when used with neutral-pH liquids like water—not with citrus fruits or vinegar.

4/7

Risk of copper toxicity

Although copper is an essential trace mineral, ingesting too much of it can be toxic. Drinking nimbu pani made in a copper vessel repeatedly may lead to a gradual build-up of copper in the body. Symptoms of copper toxicity include nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and in severe cases, liver and kidney damage. This risk increases if lemon water is left in the copper vessel for extended periods.

5/7

Copper and reaction

Lemon contains citric acid, which is highly reactive with metals like copper. When lemon juice is added to a copper vessel, it reacts with the copper to form copper salts such as copper citrate. These salts dissolve into the drink and can alter its taste and safety. The result is a metallic, sometimes sour taste—and more importantly, an unsafe chemical composition that can affect health over time.

6/7

Use Safer Utensils

To enjoy the full benefits of nimbu pani without any health risks, always use glass, stainless steel, or earthen pots. These materials are non-reactive and preserve the nutrients and flavor of lemon water. While copper has its place in holistic wellness, it's best reserved for plain drinking water—never for citrusy or acidic drinks like nimbu pani.

7/7

Acidic Liquids

However, it clearly advises against storing acidic substances like lemon juice in copper, as the reaction can produce harmful by-products. Copper is only safe when used with neutral-pH liquids like water—not with citrus fruits or vinegar.
