Plastic ban for primary food packaging

With a motive to make Tamil Nadu plastic-free, the state government has issued notification regarding ban of use of plastic for primary food packaging. Issued on June 5, World Environment Day, the notification clearly states, "Plastic bags, which constitute or form an “integral part of packaging” in which goods are sealed prior to use at manufacturing or processing units, are not exempted any more from the plastic ban."Here's everything you need to know about the notification.

Tamil Nadu govt's order

According to news reports, the plastic bags which are used as an integral part of packaging for sealing goods to avoid any sort of damage are not exempted under this plastic ban notification. As per the government order, the concerned authorities will explore alternatives along with Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology. As per a statement, the alternative packaging material has to be compostable plastic and it has to be approved by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.

What are the hurdles?

According to experts, the notification is in favour of nature and society but it is important to understand that even medical equipment is packed in plastic material and an immediate remedy in this context is not possible.
4/5

Future of food and beverage packaging

While the state government and central government are yet to explore alternatives to plastic packaging, there are individuals who are working on it and have been discovering alternatives. A recent alternative to minimize the use of plastic water bottles has been coined by Delhi-based Ankur Chawla and Bhrigu Seth. Called as Responsible Whatr, these are mineral water cans who have designed sustainable and endlessly recyclable aluminium mineral water cans. According to Ankur Chawla, aluminium is a natural choice for packaging as it does not contribute to heaps of landfills and is recycled 70% as compared to glass and plastic. It does not alter the freshness of the water when exposed to light or heat and the water remains fresh and cold. As a beverage expert, Ankur claims that these cans are sustainable, eco-friendly, and are designed as a solution to bring about a change in the society.
5/5

Bottomline

Nature is a free source of all necessary nutrients and it is our duty to keep it safe. While the state and central government is working on specific guidelines to reduce the usage of plastic, it is our duty to be responsible and adopt alternatives that are easily available to us.
