FSSAI new guidelines for sweets shop

While buying packaged food, we all cross-check the packaging and expiry date. But, have you ever cross-checked the expiry date of sweets bought from the neighbourhood halwai shop. If not, FSSAI has now made it easy for you, as all the sweet shops have been instructed to declare the manufacturing and best before date of all loose sweets available in his shop from June 1, 2020. India’s food regulator, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed that all the non-packaged/loose sweets seller that the container or tray holding sweets at the outlet should display the “date of manufacturing" and “best before date" of the said products. For the same, the food safety commissioners of states and union territories have been directed to ensure compliance of the order.

What’s the idea behind this rule?

According to FSSAI, the idea is to ensure that consumption of such products does not pose a potential health hazard to the consumers. The step has been taken to control the issues of adulteration and use of sub-standard products. To make it a smooth process, FSSAI has issued an indicative shelf life along with a suggestive logo of various types of sweets made with milk.

FSSAI guidance note for milk products

According to the guidance note issued by FSSAI, traditional milk-based sweets are generally prepared from khoya, chhena, sugar and other ingredients such as maida, flavours and colours e.g. peda, burfi, milk cake, gulab jamun, rasgulla, rasmalai etc. Sweets have limited shelf life. Sweets particularly those with milk products have lesser shelf life and are more prone to microbial growth. Therefore sanitation and hygiene in their preparation and consumption within shelf life is of utmost importance.

Shop owners reaction

While many of the sweets shop owners are with FSSAI, a few of them think that certain rules are hard to implement. According to shop owners, a lot of milk products have a limited shelf life, while some have a longer shelf life and thus, it is difficult to put a label on each category because of varying shelf lives.
5/5

Verdict

While the regulation will surely insure the availability of quality sweets, but at the same time, it will be a difficult task for sweet shops to regulate the processing and labelling to avoid any chaos.
