What happens when you eat soaked fenugreek seeds

Seeds are said to be the superfoods that help build metabolism and also boost overall strength of the body. And in recent times, soaked seeds have made their way into the daily routine of many of us. One such seed that has immense potential is fenugreek seeds or methi seeds. These seeds have been traditionally used for their medicinal properties, especially in managing blood sugar levels. Rich in soluble fiber, they slow down the absorption of carbohydrates in the digestive tract, helping prevent sudden spikes in glucose after meals. Also, they contain compounds like 4-hydroxyisoleucine that can improve insulin sensitivity and support the body’s natural glucose regulation. In a recent video on Instagram Sadhguru called methi seeds as 'miracle medicine'. Scroll down to read the details.

What does Sadhguru say?

In his Instagram reel video, he said that drinking fenugreek seed tea once a week or once in a month can help detoxify the digestive system, boost the heart health and cleanse the liver. He calls it a cleansing agent, which can further aid in reducing signs of many ailments.

How to make fenugreek tea

Take a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds and boil it with 2 cups of water. Strain the decoction, add a few drops of honey and sip it. Consume it once a week, or once in a month, suggests Sadhguru.

What does Ayurveda say?

In Ayurveda, fenugreek is said to balance vata and kapha doshas. Its warming and slightly bitter taste helps stimulate digestion and remove sluggishness from the body. Fenugreek also enhances agni (digestive fire) , reduces bloating, and helps manage acidity or indigestion. Ayurveda also values methi for its ability to stabilize blood sugar by slowing down the absorption of glucose, beneficial for diabetics. Ayurveda says that consuming soaked methi seeds help control appetite, improve metabolism, and reduce fat accumulation as well.

What does the study say?

According to a study titled Effect of Fenugreek on Hyperglycemia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, fenugreek is used for medicinal purposes in various traditions. Some studies have demonstrated that the seeds of this plant may have an anti-diabetic effect by lowering fasting blood sugar levels and improving glucose tolerance. Alkaloids such as trigonelline and Fenugrecin present in fenugreek have been shown to have hypoglycemic activity, whereas soluble fibers such as glucomannan fiber and 4-hydroxyisoleucine (4-OH Ile) amino acids stimulate the production of insulin from the pancreas. Furthermore, a clinical study showed that fenugreek’s antidiabetic effect was accomplished by increasing insulin sensitivity. In contrast, some studies have found that fenugreek seeds may decrease postprandial insulin and glucose levels (PPG). Additionally, a few longer-term trials with fenugreek have also demonstrated decreases in fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and PPG as well as glycated hemoglobin.

What else to add?

Cinnamon: It pairs well with soaked methi and adding a pinch of cinnamon powder in warm water may help improve insulin sensitivity and stabilize glucose levels too. It is also said that cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar levels, preventing mid-morning energy crashes or sugar cravings. The study titled Cinnamon Use in Type 2 Diabetes: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis by PMC, states that consumption of cinnamon is associated with a statistically significant decrease in levels of fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglyceride levels, and an increase in HDL-C levels.

How to consume: Soak methi seeds in water overnight and before drinking it in morning, add a pinch of cinnamon to it.
Turmeric: As per experts, curcumin in turmeric reduces inflammation and improves insulin action. According to a study titled Curcumin and Diabetes: A Systematic Review, curcumin could favorably affect most of the leading aspects of diabetes, including insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and islet apoptosis and necrosis. In addition, curcumin could prevent the deleterious complications of diabetes.
How to consume: It is suggested that one can combine methi seeds with turmeric and warm milk or water for added benefits. One can add them to curries as well for effective results.
