Recently, she posted a post on her Instagram, wherein she explained the need for washing rice as an essential step in cooking. In the video, she shared that “So what people do not realize is that the first important step to cooking basmati rice is to rinse it.” Padma Lakshmi shares this while holding a bowl of rice. In fact, Padma Lakshmi shows the entire process of rinsing the cloudy water and rinsing multiple times to remove the starch.
The rice making trick
She further mentioned that many people do not wash their rice as they assume that it washes away the nutrients, but she shared that “I was raised to wash rice,” she adds. According to her, “removing starch ensures that the rice turns out perfectly fluffy.” She calls the whole process ‘meditative, as she loves standing by the window, rinsing the rice around in the water.
Padma Lakshmi captioned the post as “Don't forget to rinse your basmati rice until the water runs clear!! What you don't see is that I rinsed this rice at least seven times before it was ready to cook.” So, once the rice is ready, spread it on a plate or bowl so that the moisture evaporates.
