What made PM Modi thank Indian tea garden workers?

International Tea Day, celebrated on May 21, recognizes the cultural, economic, and social importance of tea across the world. According to reports, the United Nations officially recognized International Tea Day in 2019 after a proposal led by tea-producing nations and the first UN-recognized celebration took place in 2020. But let us be honest, in India, every day is a tea day, as it is not just a beverage, but a daily ritual that begins with simmering water. As the soft sound of bubbling creates a calming rhythm, fresh tea leaves slowly unfurl and release their deep aroma into the air, making the home more relaxing. Brewing tea is more than just preparing a beverage; it is a moment of pause and connection that brings people together, just as it brought the Prime Minister a step closer to the tea-garden workers during one of his speeches, shared by the official Instagram handle of BJP. Scroll down to read the details.

What did PM Modi say?

According to a reel video, shared by the official Instagram handle of BJP (bjp4india), during a gathering, PM Modi recalled his humble beginning and thanked Assam's tea garden workers whose tea once, reached his village and became part of his journey. He said, "Aur mere liye toh, mere tea garden workers ka samaan karna matlab, main khud ke karz utar raha hoon." He further explained, "Kyunki ap chai baagan mein kaam karte the, door wahan Gujarat ke mere gaon mein wo chai ki patti pahuchti thi, aur main chai bechkar yahan tak pahuch gaya." Which translates: For PM Modi, respecting and honoring tea garden workers is like repaying a personal debt. Because while tea garden workers worked in the gardens here in Assam, those tea leaves travelled all the way to PM Modi's village in Gujarat, and by selling that tea, he was able to reach where he is today. As he completed his speech he received a standing ovation for his gratitude towards the tea garden workers.

Why PM Modi can't enjoy chai like before

In April 2019, in an exclusive interview with India Today, when he was asked if PM Modi can drink tea on the roadside like he used to before or if SPG (Special Protection Group) rules prevent him from doing so, he said, "They are also human beings, they do understand my helplessness but I've to follow their rules." For the uninitiated, the Special Protection Group is an elite security force in India responsible for protecting the Prime Minister of India and, at certain times, former prime ministers and their immediate family members.
