How to differentiate between a fruit and vegetable?

We are pretty sure you will get your majority of answers wrong here. Bet you know the fruits from your vegetables? Think again! Some fruits are often used as vegetables but are actually fruits! Fruit is a seed-bearing part of the plant. It develops from the ovary of the flowering part of the plant. Vegetables refer to the other parts like roots, stems and leaves. Hence it is not at all important for the fruits to be always sweet and the vegetables to be always savory!

Tomatoes

One of the most commonly mistaken fruit referred to as a vegetable all the time is a tomato! Tomatoes are indeed one of the major fruits used in cooking vegetables. They contain the seeds of the plant and are developed from the ovary situated at the base of the flower.

Lady Finger

This velvety green fruit which is again mistaken to be a vegetable is a fruit. Okra also known as the lady's finger is a flowering plant with edible seed pods. Okra is primarily used as a vegetable. It is sometimes also used in soups and stews.

Egg Plant

Look very closely it is not a vegetable. On close observation, you will find out that it is a fruit. There are several seeds in the flesh of this plant which makes it a legitimate fruit!

6/11

Avocado

Avocado is a fruit too. It is a single seed creamy berry. According to experts, this fruit is referred to as a matured ovary of the flower.

7/11

Pumpkin

Anybody who would cut a pumpkin, would find out that it has plenty of seeds, which makes it a fruit and not a vegetable!

8/11

Olives

Like most of the stone fruits, for example, mangoes, peaches and dates, Olive too is a stone fruit!

9/11

Green Peas

Green peas are not fruits technically but dear friend, the pods inside it, sure are!

10/11

Red Chili

With so many seeds inside the red chilli, it is but obvious by now that it is a fruit.
