Is butter better than ghee?

Butter and ghee have always been frowned upon by the doctors because of the high cholesterol value they hold. While over indulgence in them still pose a threat to heart health, one will be surprised to know that these are not as bad as they are portrayed to be! But the debate, whether Ghee is better than butter or vice versa continues till date. Choosing one over another won’t bring any major changes in your lifestyle- but they definitely make a difference in culinary usage. Here are some similarities and differences between the two which will help you decide which one to go for while on a diet.

2/6

Nutritional Values

Ghee is a nutritional powerhouse and so is butter. Nutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin E, antioxidants, riboflavin, phosphorus, and calcium are found in both.

3/6

Impact on immunity

Butter can protect cells from free radicals. It improves eyesight and even prevents breast and stomach cancer.

Similarly, Ghee has cancer-fighting CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) which combats cardiovascular diseases as well as cancerous disease.

4/6

Calories

Ghee has a slightly higher concentration of fat and more calorie content than butter. While one tablespoon of ghee has about 120 calories, one tablespoon of butter has about 102 calories.

5/6

Lactose Content

Ghee contains fewer milk proteins than butter, hence people with milk allergy and lactose intolerance should opt for this. But if someone is relying on dairy products for daily protein intake, then butter is definitely better.

6/6

Flavours

While ghee is slightly salty, butter’s sweet essence makes it perfect for baking. If you want a savory dish, opt for ghee always!

Like we can see, the differences aren’t much but the similarities are. Whether one chooses butter over ghee, it completely depends on their choice, taste and the kind of diet or dish being prepared. Both are safe to consume but in moderation, of course!!
