Health benefits of egg

Think of a highly nutritious and versatile food enjoyed by people worldwide, and the first name that pops up in mind is "egg." Eggs, considered a nutritional powerhouse, contain a wide range of essential nutrients, including protein, vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and more. When it comes to eggs, they consist of two parts, egg white and egg yolk, and there is always a debate about which one is healthier between the two. This piece of information explores the nutritional values and benefits of these two parts of eggs. Scroll down to read the details.

Nutritional value of egg white

One large egg white, which is around 33-35 g contains 17 calories, 3.6 g protein with all essential amino acids, 0 fat, 0.2 g carbs, 0 mg cholesterol, 55 mg sodium, 54 mg potassium, and 0 g sugar.

3/6

Benefits of egg white

According to a study titled The Health Benefits of Egg Protein, in egg whites, ovotransferrin binds metal ions, ovomucin has antiviral properties, and lysozyme disrupts the cell walls of Gram-positive bacteria. It is important to remember that egg whites contain protease inhibitors that might decrease amino acid digestibility. However, these can be easily destroyed by heat, highlighting the importance of cooked eggs being a better source of bioavailable protein. It is also mentioned that egg white is an excellent protein source with antioxidants, anti fatigue, visceral fat reduction, muscle-building, and gut health benefits. Its bioactive peptides contribute to these effects, making it a valuable component of a healthy diet. Another study also validates that egg white is a commonly used source of protein and peptides. It is said that one egg white contains just 17 calories and has 0.2 g fat per piece, making them a suitable choice for those watching their calorie and fat intake. Also, egg whites do not contain cholesterol, which may be beneficial for individuals with high cholesterol levels or heart disease risk factors. While egg whites are rich in protein, they lack many of the vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats found in egg yolks, including vitamins A, D, E, K, B12, riboflavin, folate, and essential fatty acids. And, egg whites contain potassium, which can help reduce and maintain blood pressure. The riboflavin vitamin helps in preventing cataracts and migraine headaches.

4/6

Nutritional value of egg yolk

One large egg yolk, which is approx. 17 g contains 55 calories, 2.7 g protein 4.5-5 g fat, 0.6 g carbs, 185 mg cholesterol, 8 mg sodium, and 0 g sugar.

5/6

Benefits of egg yolk

It is said that one egg yolk contains around 55 calories along with other essential nutrients, including vitamins (A, D, E, K, B vitamins), minerals (iron, phosphorus, zinc), and healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids. Also, egg yolks are one of the best dietary sources of choline, a nutrient important for brain health, liver function, and metabolism. As per experts, one egg yolk provides 147 mg of choline. As per a study titled Egg Yolk as a New Source of Peptides with Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties, egg yolk is rich in bioactive peptides and proteins such as phosvitin, lysozyme, and cystatin, which have antioxidant, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, immunomodulatory, and anti-cancer activities. It is also mentioned in the study that eggs are traditionally considered as a natural source of compounds with antioxidant properties, including several proteins, phospholipids, and certain micronutrients such as vitamin E, vitamin A, selenium, and carotenoids. It is mostly known from lecithin, which is widely used as a lubricant, surfactant, and emulsifying agent. Egg yolk can also provide lysozyme, cystatin, avidin, phosvitin, and phospholipids.

Final words

While they both have their own positives and negatives, their consumption depends on the nutritional requirements of an individual. Egg whites are low in calories and almost pure protein, making them ideal if you’re aiming for weight loss, lean muscle building, or a low-fat breakfast. They contain no cholesterol and are easy to digest. On the other hand, egg yolks are nutrient-dense, offering healthy fats, vitamin D, choline, B vitamins, and antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which support brain, eye, and hormone health. While yolks are higher in calories and cholesterol, they provide essential nutrients that whites alone lack. Hence, if you are looking for a lighter, high-protein breakfast, egg whites make for a wise choice. And if you prefer a nutrient-rich, balanced meal, then think of including the yolk in your breakfast.
