Brilliant ways to use almond peel

Soaking and eating almonds after removing the peel has been an age-old ritual in most Indian households. But what if we tell you that discarding almond peel is a bad idea! Yes, this may sound like a bluff, but much like almonds the peels of this healthy nut contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are great for health, skin and hair. Is it safe to eat almonds with their skin?

While eating soaked and peeled almonds is a traditional way of consuming them, experts believe that it is safe to eat unpeeled almonds as the skin too has nutrients. However, it is always suggested to soak almonds before eating with or without peel as in some cases almonds skin may contain a chemical known as Phytic acid, which is harmful for health.

Works as a natural laxative

The brown skin of almonds is rich in fiber, promotes good bacteria in the gut and has flavonoids. Make a simple mixture of dried almond peels with flaxseeds, melon seeds and mishri, consume with warm milk and this can work as a natural laxative due to the presence of insoluble fiber, which helps in easing bowel movement.

Vegan bacon bits

If you are following a clean diet, but still miss bacon bits for breakfast, then almond peel can be the best thing for you! Take 1 cup almond peels, rinse them well and let them sun dry. Next, take a bowl and add 1 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon paprika, salt and pepper as per taste. Mix it all well and add the dry almond peel. Next, line a parchment paper on a baking tray. Bake it for 5-10 minutes till it turns crispy like bacon and enjoy it anytime.

Almond hair mask

To make this easy hair mask take ½ cup almond peels, blend it with 1 egg, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 2 tablespoon aloe gel and honey. Strain the mixture using a sieve apple on the hair and this would work like a hair spa as it is loaded with the goodness of vitamin E.

Almond peel ladoo

To make this simple ladoo, take a blender and add 1 cup almond peels, ¼ cup flax seeds, 1 cup desiccated coconut and jaggery. Grind it into a coarse powder and mix it with warm ghee/ milk. Make small laddoos and enjoy.

Almond Chutney

Nut chutneys are delicious and so is this simple chutney made with the peel of almonds. To make this simple chutney, take a pan and add some ghee roast 1 cup peanuts, 1 cup almond peels, 1 tablespoon of urad dal, toss it nicely and transfer to a bowl. Next, once the mixture attains room temperature, grind it all together along with 3 green chilies, 3 cloves of garlic, 1 inch ginger and 2 teaspoon lemon juice salt and pepper. Next, for the tempering, add in ghee, curry leaves, whole red chilies and mustard seeds. Once it starts spluttering, pour it over the chutney and enjoy.
