Feeling bloated and constipated is common, but there are several reasons that may secretly aggravate constipation and worsen the condition. And food happens to be one of the major reasons that can cause constipation. But what exactly is constipation and how your diet makes a big difference in terms of preventing or curing this common digestive issue.

There are several factors like lack of sleep, lack of hydration, low-fiber diet, too spicy food, which can spoil can secretly worsen the constipation and turn it into hemorrhoids, fissure to name a few. Here are a few foods that must be avoided to ensure a smooth bowel movement.

2/7

Red meat

Another common food that may be the hidden reason for aggravated constipation and bloating is red meat. Most people love indulging in red on a regular basis as breakfast sausages, steaks, roasts and curries, but this delicious food is low in fiber and high in fat, which causes constipation, in case it is not paired with ample quantities of veggies and leafy greens.

Apart from that, intake of red meat may also increase the risk of cardiac diseases.

3/7

Gluten

Gluten is one of the major reasons that despite eating a balanced diet, there’s sudden constipation and bloating. This is because the gluten (protein) in certain foods can stick to the walls of the intestines disturbing the process of digestion. It may sound strange but even the homemade roti made using wheat, barley, rye to name a few may be leading to constipation. That’s not all, the effect of gluten tolerance may vary from person to person, in some cases it can also lead to diarrhea and trigger IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Thus, if you have been suffering from constipation, avoiding gluten can be a good way to get rid of this health condition.

4/7

Oily and junk food

Indulging in oily and junk foods can gradually increase the risk of constipation and bloating. These foods are high in fats, low in fiber, packed with salt, preservatives and sugar, which may eventually make the digestion slow and cause constipation. Junk and oily foods are loaded with fats, salt and sugar which extracts fluid content of stool, which makes it dry and disturbs the bowel movement causing constipation, anal fissures and hemorrhoids.

5/7

Refined grains

Processed and refined grains can also cause constipation, this is because the bran and germ of the grains are removed during the process of refining. Bran has the maximum amount of fiber when it comes to grains. In fact, foods made with processed grains like breads, rice and pasta may increase the risk of chronic constipation due to the absence of bran as it adds bulk to the stool and helps in smooth bowel movement.

6/7

Dairy products

Can milk and dairy products trigger constipation? Well, the answer is yes.

This is because of the high protein content in milk and milk based products, which may trigger intolerance and cause constipation or diarrhea in some cases. According to a study, it was observed that drinking cow’s milk can trigger sensitivity due to the presence of proteins and cause constipation in kids and infants.

7/7

Alcohol

Regular consumption of alcohol may cause dehydration in the body, which may aggravate constipation and bloating. The loss of fluids through urine leads to sudden dehydration, which triggers constipation.

The impact of alcohol may vary from person to person, but a regular intake of alcohol may cause digestive ailments and disturb the digestive process.
