Can eating bacon cause sudden food allergies?

Are you someone who loves gorging on crispy bacon strips and delightful bacon bits along with your sandwiches, pastas, or burgers but often struggles with sudden rashes right after eating them and often overlooks it as a basic skin issue? Then you must pause and read this! Well, eating certain foods often causes sudden food allergies, which turn severe in some cases, but can bacon actually trigger allergic reactions,, and why does it happen? Read on to find out…

2/4

What is bacon?

There’s no denying that bacon is a popular breakfast and snack delight. Much like other cold cuts and processed meats, this one too is highly processed and is made with pork meat, which may contain pathogens and germs that may cause rare allergies and ailments. To reduce the risk of infections and allergies, bacon is processed heavily with additives and preservatives, which is another reason why bacon may not be great for everyone!

3/4

What the study says

According to a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, consuming bacon may trigger a condition known as alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), where people develop an allergy to red meat, including pork, after being bitten by certain ticks. It was also found that the allergy caused by bacon may often lead to delayed reactions, such as hives, stomach pain, and even anaphylaxis, itching, nausea, stomach cramps, and difficulty breathing several hours after consuming foods like bacon.

Proteins and additives

Bacon is made from pork, which contains specific animal proteins that can cause allergic reactions in people with pork meat allergies. Apart from that, commercially prepared bacon is made with preservatives such as nitrates, nitrites, and flavor enhancers, which may contribute to hypersensitivity or intolerance. Some people may also react to cross-contaminants like soy, milk proteins, or gluten, depending on how the bacon is processed.
