Difference between Broccoli and Patta Gobhi

When it comes to healthy eating, cruciferous vegetables are often mentioned to be a part of a regular diet. Wondering why? Well, because they are packed with vitamins C, K, and folate, along with fiber and plant-based compounds called glucosinolates, they support immunity, digestion, and heart health as well. These veggies are especially valued for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help lower the risk of chronic diseases, including certain cancers. And most importantly, they are low in calories but very rich in nutrients. This piece of information explores two such cruciferous veggies, their importance, and which one makes for a better choice.

2/8

What is broccoli

It is a green-coloured cruciferous vegetable that belongs to the cabbage family and looks like a small tree, with a thick stalk and clusters of green flower buds on top.

3/8

Nutritional profile of broccoli

According to the USDS data, 100 gms of broccoli contains 34 calories, 89.3 g water, 2.82 g protein, 0.37 g total fat, 2.6 g dietary fiber, 1.7 g sugars, 89.2 mg vitamin C, 101.6 µg vitamin K and more

Health benefits of broccoli

According to PMC, broccoli is rich in vitamins (especially vitamin C and K), minerals, fiber, and unique sulfur-containing compounds like glucosinolates and sulforaphane. The dietary fiber, particularly soluble fiber, helps regulate cholesterol by binding bile acids, increasing their excretion and reducing cholesterol synthesis. Fiber also slows carbohydrate digestion, moderating blood glucose and insulin levels, which helps prevent metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

5/8

What is Patta Gobhi

Also known as cabbage, it is a leafy green or purple vegetable that grows in a round, compact head form. It belongs to Brassica family (same as broccoli, cauliflower, and kale) and is used to make sabzis, parathas, pakoras, stir-fries, and even pickles.

6/8

Nutritional profile of patta gobhi

The USDA data states that 100 g cabbage offers 25 calories, 92.2 g water, 1.28 g protein, 0.10 g fat, 2.5 g dietary fiber, 3.2 g sugars, 36.6 mg vitamin C, 76 µg vitamin K and more.

7/8

Health benefits of patta gobhi

As per PMC, cabbage is rich in various nutrients, including calcium, proteins, and vitamins C and E and contains various bioactive compounds with pharmacological properties, such as luteolin, myricetin, quercetin, and polyphenols. Consequently, cabbage has been widely used in traditional medicine to treat various diseases. Specifically, it is used to alleviate symptoms associated with gastrointestinal disorders (gastritis, peptic ulcers, and irritable bowel syndrome) and idiopathic cephalalgia as well as treat injuries. Growing evidence indicates that cabbage has pharmacological activities against various diseases, including liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, cancer, and hypocholesterolemia. Also cabbage is low in calories and provides decent fiber, making it filling and gut-friendly. It is a budget-friendly widely available vegetable option with good nutritional value.

8/8

Which is better?

Broccoli is considered to be more nutrient-dense, with higher levels of antioxidants and disease-preventing compounds. And patta gobhi on the other hand is highly beneficial, more affordable, and easier to include in everyday Indian meals. Having said that, the best choice depends on your goal. For instance, those looking for maximum nutrition, broccoli is superior; and for affordability and versatility, cabbage is a winner.
