Right way to make ajwain water

When we talk about the Indian spice box, it is not just known for its aroma and vibrant spices, but for the medicinal values of those spices as well. One such spice that sits quietly in the box and is loaded with benefits is-Ajwain or Carom seeds. As per experts, beyond its culinary role, ajwain is known for digestive properties, which includes providing relief from bloating, acidity, and indigestion. Rich in thymol, it has natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits too. Even Sadhguru recommends consuming ajwain for better digestion. But do you know what is the right way and quantity to consume ajwain? Celebrity nutritionist Shweta Shah recently shared an Instagram post, where she discussed the right way of making ajwain water, who should avoid it and some Ayurvedic tips too. Benefits of carom seeds

As per a study, carom seeds aid digestion by enhancing gastric juices, and are also said to relieve gas, bloating, and ulcers. It is also mentioned that these seeds are prominently considered carminative, eupeptic, antispasmodic, astringent and used in the treatment of mild digestive disorders, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, morning sickness, colic, dyspeptic headache and bloating, and are said to promote the assimilation of other herbs and to improve liver function. They have also been used in bronchopulmonary disorders and as a cough remedy, as well as an analgesic.

Who should avoid/limit it

As per Shweta, those with pitta dominance, acidity, ulcers, and burning sensation should avoid it. Also, pregnant women should avoid it, as its excess consumption may cause uterine contractions. She also warns that people with gastritis or heat-related skin issues should avoid it. If you have dryness or constipation, combine it with ghee or jaggery.

The right quantity matter

As per Shweta's post, for digestion, 1/2 tsp roasted ajwain after meals is right. For ajwain water, combine 1 tsp ajwain with 1 cup water. Boil for 5 mins and sip warm once a day. For postpartum use, take 1 tbsp ajwain and add it to 2 cups water, boil for 5-7 minutes and drink twice daily.

Ayurvedic tip

In her post, she also gave an Ayurvedic tip for consuming ajwain. Always pair ajwain with a little jaggery or ghee, as it helps balances pitta, improves taste and absorption, and also keeps the gut cool and happy.
