Free food in exchange for plastic waste

Last month, we told you about the ‘Garbage Cafe’ in Chattisgarh which gives meals in return for plastic waste to the needy garbage pickers, who are unable to earn their bread and butter. The hidden motive of the cafe is to protect the planet from the dangerous effects of plastic. It seems like other states are getting inspiration from the cafe, as an alumni group of Goethals Memorial School along with efforts of the Nishkam Khalsa Sewa in Siliguri are distributing free food in exchange for 500 grams of plastic waste.

2/5

The initiative

The alumni’s motive is to ensure the safe disposal of plastic waste and to make that happen, they have started the unique idea of distributing free food to the poor and the needy in return for 500 grams of discarded plastic items like water bottles, bags, containers and more.
3/5

Why the sudden change?

According to experts, the change is because of global warming reaching an alarming level. The drastic change in weather has not only affected the metropolitans but B-tier towns too and that’s the reason, people are stepping ahead to bring the change. Funding is the biggest issue for such initiative and concerned government bodies need to pitch in to make it easier. In case of Garbage Cafe, a budget of ₹ 5 lakh was approved by the government, but here Nishkam Khalsa Sewa is supporting the change.
4/5

The core problem

We need to understand that plastic is wreaking havoc on the environment and causing serious pollution that is choking the water bodies. Also, when burnt they cause air pollution that results in breathing issues. All these efforts will help in proper disposal of plastic waste that will help protect the environment and at the same time will help the needy people in earning a healthy meal to live a healthier life.
5/5

Verdict

We are happy to see young minds making a move towards a healthier society. We hope that the government will soon pitch in with hands of support to make it better and way more effective.
