Foods that fight cancer naturally

Cancer is a complex group of diseases and is often caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. And when we talk about lifestyle factors, our dietary choices play a crucial role in it. A diet rich in bioactive compounds like polyphenols, flavonoids, glucosinolates, and omega-3s can support the body's natural defenses against cancer. As per experts, these nutrients help neutralize free radicals, reduce inflammation, and regulate cell growth, preventing mutations that lead to tumor formation. Time and again studies have proven how the right foods and their right timings can affect the overall functioning of the body. It is said that there are cancer-fighting foods that one should add in their daily diet to stay fit. Certain plant-based compounds promote detoxification, enhance immune function, and even trigger apoptosis in abnormal cells. As per the study Association between dietary factors and breast cancer risk: a matched case-control study in Vietnam, soy foods contain isoflavones, which have been associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. Take a look at these 8 cancer-fighting foods that one can add in their diet for a healthier tomorrow.

Blueberries

Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, that help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, both linked to cancer development. It is proven that blueberries have anthocyanins compounds that inhibit tumour growth. Also, a review in Antioxidants (2016) suggests that the antioxidants in berries may lower cancer risk by neutralizing free radicals.

3/9

Cruciferous Vegetables

Vegetables like broccoli and brussels sprouts contain glucosinolates, which produce compounds with anticancer properties. They also contain sulforaphane, a potent anticancer agent that inhibits cancer cell growth. A 2018 review in Molecules highlighted sulforaphane's effectiveness against prostate, breast, colon, and lung cancer cells in lab and animal studies. Also, research from UCLA Health indicates that consuming cruciferous vegetables can significantly reduce cancer risk.

4/9

Tomatoes

They are high in lycopene, an antioxidant that may protect against certain cancers, notably prostate cancer. Study: A study in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention (2002) found an association between tomato intake and reduced prostate cancer risk. Also, antioxidants in tomatoes may protect the gastric lining and inhibit the growth of H. pylori, a bacteria linked to stomach cancer. It is reported that American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) supports the inclusion of tomatoes in a cancer-preventive diet due to lycopene and other antioxidants.

5/9

Walnuts

They provide omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, which inhibit cancer cell growth. According to Nutrition and Cancer (2015), walnut consumption was linked to a reduced risk of breast cancer in animal studies. It is said that walnuts contain a unique combination of omega-3 fatty acids, polyphenols, antioxidants, and phytosterols, all of which contribute to their cancer-fighting potential.

6/9

Grapes

They are proven to contain resveratrol, an antioxidant with potential anticancer effects. An article in the New York Post (2025) highlights that grapes, rich in resveratrol, may help prevent cancer and improve overall health. Especially red, purple, and black varieties — are packed with antioxidants and natural plant compounds that have been shown to help protect against cancer. A study published in Nutrition and Cancer says that resveratrol was found to inhibit estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells.

7/9

Oranges

They are packed with powerful compounds that may help protect against cancer. Their cancer-fighting ability comes from a mix of vitamin C, flavonoids, limonoids, and fiber, all of which work together to reduce oxidative stress, support the immune system, and inhibit cancer cell growth. Research in Frontiers in Oncology (2017) noted that high vitamin C intake may slow tumor growth and increase survival in some cancers. Also, citrus flavonoids (like Hesperidin & Naringenin) found in oranges help regulate cell growth. A 2014 review in Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry found citrus flavonoids had protective effects against breast, colon, liver, and prostate cancers.

8/9

Legumes

Legumes like beans and lentils are high in fiber and phytochemicals, which may protect against colorectal cancer. Research in Cancer Causes & Control (2011) indicates that legume intake is linked to a decreased risk of colorectal polyps. Also, a study by The World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) recommends fiber-rich foods like legumes to reduce colorectal cancer risk. Legumes contain flavonoids, saponins, and phenolic acids which prevent DNA damage, inhibit cancer cell growth, and promote apoptosis.

9/9

Green Tea

They contain catechins, an antioxidant that may prevent cancer cell proliferation. A meta-analysis in Oncotarget (2017) found that green tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of liver cancer. They are rich in EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate), a potent polyphenol that inhibits cancer cell proliferation. Also, high antioxidant content found in green tea helps reduce inflammation and improve gut health.
