Common foods to avoid and why

Food is thy medicine, and this is what we have always been taught. But what if the food becomes the reason for illness? Such situations raise significant concerns, as many common foods are currently being questioned due to health risks associated with bacterial growth or large-scale adulteration. Here we have marked 5 common foods that are risky to consume and why.

2/6

Cold cut meat

According to a report by the USDA cold cut meat is not a safe option as around 7 million pounds of meat were recalled due to an outbreak of Listeria, resulting in many illnesses and hospitalizations and even several deaths. It is said that because of the high risk of contamination it is not safe for kids and expecting women.

3/6

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are also not safe because of Salmonella contamination which comes from animal waste in the soil or water. It has been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC, it can cause severe health issues, hence once should be careful. The report suggests to clean, separate, cook, and chill your cucumbers before consumption.

4/6

Raw milk

Raw milk is highly prone to Salmonella and E. coli contamination and raw milk consumption is something one should avoid at all costs. The pasteurization process (which involves heating the products to at least 161 degrees) kills the bacteria and one should consume milk only after it is heated rightly.

5/6

Eggs

CDC has reported that there have been cases of multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to eggs and hence it is important to check the date of packaging and expiry date of eggs before buying. And in case anything smells awful, one should throw away such eggs. CDC also suggests washing items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled eggs using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

6/6

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens are likely to have an increased risk of E. coli and Listeria through contaminated soil and water, as reported by CDC. As per experts, washing the greens and removing the outer leaves can help reduce the risk of ingesting contaminated greens.
