Benefits of consuming Gond Katira

Summer is here and it is important to keep the body cool and hydrated. And one of the ways to do so is to add Gond Katira in your summer diet. Also known as Tragacanth Gum, it is a natural resin derived from the sap of certain plants, commonly used in Ayurveda and traditional Indian remedies. It's known for its cooling, hydrating, and medicinal properties. As per Ayurveda, it is a rasayana, which helps revitalize the body, improve strength, stamina, and overall vitality. It has cooling properties, which help calm inflammation, skin issues, nosebleeds, and excessive heat-related symptoms — all signs of aggravated pitta. Take a look at 5 reasons to add Gond Katira in your summer diet.

2/7

Natural body coolant

As per Ayurveda, it is considered sheeta (cooling) in potency and snigdha (lubricating) in quality, making it perfect for pacifying pitta dosha — which governs heat, digestion, and metabolism in the body. Consuming it in the summer helps prevent heat strokes, dehydration, and nosebleeds.

3/7

Good for bones and joints

Ayurveda and folk sciences suggest that gond katira is highly beneficial for bone and joint health. It helps strengthen bones, lubricate joints, and aid recovery after physical stress or injury. As per experts, gond katira is rich in calcium, magnesium, and proteins, which help improve bone density and strengthen skeletal structure — making it useful for people with weak bones or osteoporosis.

4/7

Boost energy

In Ayurveda, it is classified as a Rasayana, which helps rebuild strength, revitalize tissues, and increase endurance — both physically and mentally. It contains plant-based proteins, calcium, and essential minerals, all of which support muscle function, energy metabolism, and cell repair. When soaked and consumed, it forms a jelly-like substance that’s easy to digest and helps maintain steady energy levels without spikes or crashes. They are also rich in plant-based polysaccharides, which provides sustained energy and helps combat fatigue, especially in hot weather. It also acts as a natural body coolant, reducing heat-induced tiredness and restoring stamina. It also contains calcium, magnesium, and protein, which help in muscle recovery and energy metabolism.

5/7

Relieves constipation

As per experts, when soaked in water, it swells into a soft, jelly-like substance that adds bulk to the stool and promotes smooth bowel movements without straining. It is also said that its mucilaginous texture coats and soothes the intestinal walls, making it easier for waste to pass through the colon. And as per Ayurveda, it is considered sheetal which helps reduce inflammation in the gut and eases heat-related digestive issues like acidity, gas, and constipation. Its water-absorbing capacity helps keep the digestive tract lubricated, reducing strain during bowel movements.

6/7

Good for skin health

It is proven to retain water like a sponge, hence, it helps deeply hydrate dry, dull, or flaky skin, leaving it soft and supple. Its cooling nature helps calm acne, rashes, sunburns, and redness, especially during hot weather or pitta imbalance. It is said that its regular consumption helps detox the body, flush out toxins, and improve blood circulation, which reflects as a natural glow on your skin. It also contains natural compounds that help tighten the skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and boost collagen when used consistently.

7/7

How to use it

Soak 1 tsp of gond katira in a glass of water overnight. Add it in chilled milk along with some soaked sabja seeds for cooling and enjoy. One can also mix it in regular lemon water and top it with some honey to boost energy and digestion. One can also add it to kulfi falooda or coconut water for extra energy and cooling to the body in extreme heat.
