How to eat roasted chana right

Roasted chana, or black gram, is an Indian staple, mostly enjoyed as a snack in popular snack dishes like Jhal Muri. People also consume it plain with black salt and green chili on the side. But did you know that it is a protein-rich snack that has been a part of traditional Indian diets for centuries? It’s often eaten with jaggery or added to chivda and salads. It is also rich in fiber and is low in calories, which keeps you full for longer and prevents overeating. According to celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, chana looks like pearls of wisdom because of tryptophan, an essential amino acid and a natural antidepressant that helps to keep calm and move on. She suggests adding them into the diet to manage sugar cravings. As per a study, chana is high in protein and dietary fiber content that supports satiety, weight management, and digestive health. And the low glycemic index aids blood sugar regulation as well. Chana also has a rich mineral profile, which includes potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron. Here are five foods that one can combine with roasted chana for snacking to boost nutrition.

2/6

Gur or Jaggery

Why: Jaggery or gur is rich in iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium. It helps the body fight infections and seasonal illnesses and is traditionally eaten after meals as it activates digestive enzymes.
How to consume: Simply take a bowl of chana and gur on the side and enjoy the combination of salty and sweet. According to Rujuta, adding a small amount of jaggery to roasted chana to help satisfy sugar cravings.

3/6

Fresh veggies

Why: Fresh veggies like cucumber, tomato, onion, coriander are hydrating and also rich in vitamin C, without extra calories.
How to consume: Finely chop them and mix with roasted chana along with salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Enjoy it as a snack.

4/6

Curd

Why: Curd is rich in probiotics that help maintain healthy gut bacteria and improves digestion. And the gut bacteria and nutrients in curd strengthen the body’s defense system.
How to consume: Blend roasted and soaked chana with curd along with salt, pepper, ginger, and garlic to make a dip/chutney. Top it with a tempering of oil, mustard seeds, and curry leaves. Mix well and enjoy with dosa, idli, or even crackers.

5/6

Dried Fruits

Why: Dried fruits like raisins, figs, and cranberries offer natural sweetness, iron, and antioxidants that are good for the human body.
How to consume: Simply mix some roasted chana along with a handful of raisins and chopped dried figs for a sweet-savory combo for snacking.

6/6

Puffed Rice

Why: Also known as murmura, it is low in calories and is gentle on the stomach. It helps in weight management when eaten in moderation and is rich in iron, which boosts blood circulation.
How to consume: Add roasted chana to a bowl along with puffed rice, top it with salt, pepper, chilli powder, and mustard oil. Mix well and enjoy.
