Relation between food and diarrhea

A healthy gut is a sign of a healthy body. But, it is also a fact that once a year many of us suffer from some sort of digestive issue and the most common one is that of diarrhea. While the cause is usually uncertain, it is very important to take extra care of our body during those times. In a video on YouTube Hansa Yogendra, who runs the page called The Yoga Institute mentioned that some of the causes that lead to diarrhea could be eating contaminated food or stale food, overconsumption of junk or having food which is not compatible with your system or simply because of seasonal variations. It also happens that when food is not evenly cooked it may trigger diarrhea. Talking about the remedies, she mentioned that there are foods that add fiber to the system, firm up the stool and help to keep electrolytes in balance. She suggests avoiding spicy and hard to digest foods as they can irritate the bowels. Instead, have simple easy to digest sattvic food. Scroll down to read about the foods and the right way of consuming them.

What does Ayurveda say?

According to Ayurveda, the imbalance in any of these three doshas that are Vata, Pitta and Kapha can cause diarrhea. However, vata is more responsible for this condition. Vata which is uncontrolled or adversely impacted reduces the digestive fire and causes diarrhea by bringing more water into the intestine. As per Ayurveda, these foods will also help to regulate bowel movement and help in a better digestion.

Pomegranate Rind

As per Dr Hansa, pomegranate is a nutrition loaded fruit that is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine as well as used in home remedies in India. It's also very helpful in managing diarrhea. Pomegranate rind, which is the inner skin part of the fruit, is also beneficial in treating diarrhea. She states in the video that this concoction is effective in treating dysentery and diarrhea.

How to consume: Boil 50 grams of pomegranate rind with 250 ml of milk and reduce it till it becomes one third. Drink this in three to four equal doses throughout the day.

Ginger and Buttermilk

As per her in the video, ginger has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It relieves pain in the abdomen and helps in digestion. Buttermilk on the other hand, has good bacteria, which produces acetic acid and destroys harmful bacteria in the stomach.

How to consume: Simply mix half teaspoon of dried ginger powder in a cup of buttermilk. Drink this mixture three to four times in a day.

Cumin Seed Water

It is mentioned in the video that this concoction helps in treating diarrhea as it has an antidiarrheal effect. This helps to reduce frequent bowel movement during diarrhea.

How to consume: Roast a tablespoon full of cumin seed and grind into a fine powder. Mix this powder in a glass of water. Add a spoon of honey for taste and sip it slowly.

Raw Banana

Bananas are excellent fruit to eat when you have diarrhea, she states and adds that it is loaded with potassium, which helps in aiding digestion as well as replacing the lost nutrients. "Not just ripe bananas, but also raw bananas are beneficial for treating diarrhea," she informs in the video. Raw banana contains pectin, a fiber that absorbs excess water from the intestine and firms up the stool and also promotes good gut bacteria, which helps in better absorption of nutrients.
How to consume: Cut one raw banana into three pieces and soften them in a pressure cooker using a sufficient amount of water. Drain out the excess water. Separate the peel and mash the softened pulp. Now in a pan, roast one teaspoon full of poppy seeds. Grind the roasted seeds into a fine powder. Add this powder to the mashed banana along with a pinch of salt. This highly nutritious and delicious recipe helps in curing diarrhea very easily since it has astringent properties, she adds.

Bilwa or bael fruit is a very good fruit for helping in better digestion. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties and it is extensively used for treating diarrhea and dysentery. This fruit is rich in anti-inflammatory compounds called tannins and helps to treat diarrhea, she explains.
