How to reduce uric acid levels

Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines, which are found in foods like red meat, seafood, and alcohol. The kidneys filter and remove uric acid through urine. However, when the body produces too much or the kidneys fail to eliminate it properly, uric acid levels rise, leading to health issues like joint pain, kidney stones, kidney damage, inflammation, joint stiffness, metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity, and more. This piece of information explores homemade drinks that can help lower uric acid levels naturally and how to make them.

2/6

Cucumber juice

With 90% water content, cucumber makes for a simple and effective remedy to reduce uric acid levels. It helps flush out toxins, including uric acid. It is said that cucumber juice helps reduce blood uric acid concentration. It is said that this happens due to cucumber’s potential as a natural antihyperuricemic agent, which comes through its flavonoids, which inhibit xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in uric acid production.

How to make it: Peel, chop, and blend one cucumber with 1/4 cup water and drink it fresh.

3/6

Watermelon juice

This is also rich in water content and works against high uric acid. It is also low in purines and helps control uric acid levels. According to a study, watermelon is rich in water, which helps in the excretion of toxins, including uric acid. It has demonstrated uricosuric effect too, which means it can increase the excretion of uric acid through urine. This aids the kidneys in flushing out excess uric acid more efficiently .
How to make it: Peel and deseed 1 medium-size watermelon. Blend it well, strain and drink with a pinch of black salt.

4/6

Ginger tea

This common tea also helps reduce uric acid levels, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. According to the National Library of Medicine, ginger contains polyphenols and flavonoids that also exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation that often accompany high uric acid and gout. It is also said that regular intake of ginger tea may help reduce swelling, joint pain, and inflammation associated with hyperuricemia and gout attacks.

With natural antibacterial and antiviral properties, ginger tea can also soothe sore throats and ease congestion. Ginger also contains gingerol, a powerful anti-inflammatory compound that may help reduce joint pain and muscle soreness.

Its natural muscle-relaxing effect helps relieve period pain and discomfort. Also, ginger may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of heart disease over time.

How to make it: Boil 2 cups of water, grate 1 tbsp ginger in it. Bring it to a boil. Strain, add 1 tsp lemon juice, and honey or jaggery to taste. Enjoy it hot.

5/6

Green tea

It is also full of antioxidants that help process and eliminate excess uric acid. As per a study, polyphenols, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and gallic acid inhibit xanthine oxidase, the key enzyme in uric acid production. This helps lower uric acid production and increases its removal through kidney urate transporters. However, it is a must to drink this mindfully.

How to make it: Boil 2 cups of water, add 1 tsp green tea leaves. Let it steep for 2-3 minutes. Strain and serve with a few drops of lemon juice and honey, if desired.

Foods that reduce uric acid levels

Cherries are said to have anthocyanins, which stop uric acid from building up and help the body get rid of extra uric acid. These compounds also reduce joint inflammation, stopping pain and swelling. Citrus fruits like lemons have lots of Vitamin C, which lowers uric acid by helping the kidneys work better.
