Why to throw away these kitchen items

If the kitchen is the heart of a healthy home, offering nutritious foods, it can also be the breeding ground for harmful chemicals, germs, and bacteria that pose serious health risks. That's why it is important to pay attention to kitchen hygiene and be mindful of the utensils you use on a daily basis. Addressing the same, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford universities, recently talked about toxic kitchen items you should consider throwing out ASAP (as soon as possible) in a post on Instagram. Scroll to read the details.

Plastic cooking utensils

Dr Sethi suggests throwing away plastic cooking utensils immediately. As per his post, over time these can degrade, especially when exposed to high heat releasing harmful chemicals like BPA. It is also stated that BPA (Bisphenol A) and plastic cooking utensils highlight potential health risks primarily due to chemical leaching when plastics are heated. It is said that when exposed to heat or acidic foods, BPA can enter into food and beverages, leading to issues like infertility, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of certain cancers.Healthy alternatives: He suggests opting utensils made from safer materials such as stainless steel, silicone, or bamboo.

3/4

Plastic cutting boards

In the post Dr Sethi explains that these can also degrade over time, releasing microplastics into your food. It is mentioned by experts that microplastics from cutting boards can leach into food and raise concerns about inflammation, toxicity, and hormone disruption over time.
Healthy alternatives: He recommends shifting to safer options like wooden or glass cutting board.

4/4

Scratched or chipped non-stick pans

Dr Sethi says these pans often have PFAs, which are strongly linked to health problems like high blood pressure, cholesterol issues, and trouble with reproduction. Plus, if a non-stick pan gets damaged, it can easily release these harmful particles into your food.
Healthy alternatives: He suggests replacing them with safer alternatives like stainless steel, cast iron or fully ceramic pans.
